Everton ready to move for Michael
Sep 1 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

EVERTON have made a dramatic beat-the-transfer-deadline move to test Newcastle United’s resolve to hang on to their skipper Michael Owen.

And Goodison Park boss David Moyes was back in touch today with St James’s Park with another bid to take Alan Smith to the blue half of Merseyside.

United were also mulling over a £1.5m bid from Feyenoord to allow keeper Tim Krul to return to Holland.

Moyes and former United coach Steve Round have told Everton supremo Bill Kenwright that Owen is the one they want at Goodison Park.

And while I understand that Everton are confident that they could meet any asking price United may put on their 28-year-old skipper, they do concede that Owen’s £5m-a-year wages could be problem.

But Moyes knows Owen was as a Blues fan as a youngster.

And what price Sir Alex Ferguson making a late move for Owen should he fail to get Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs?

Moyes has made no secret of his admiration for Smith and he has been trying to push a £2m deal through for the former England international for some time now.

United released a statement at 11.30pm on Saturday saying that they had offered Owen a new three-year deal at improved terms.

It concluded: “The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James’ Park.”

He had a dreadful weekend in front of England boss Fabio Capello in Saturday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat by Arsenal at The Emirates.

Apart from one great ball from Jonas Gutierrez midway through the first half, which Owen fluffed after Shola Ameobi got in his way, the service to the skipper was practically nil.

But it does not look as though Capello has taken this into consideration after surprisingly leaving Owen out of the England squads for the World Cup qualifiers with Andorra and Croatia in the next 10 days.
