The future of the former European Footballer of the Year is currently in question after he was told by Real that they will not stand in his way if he wants to make a return to the Premiership after just one season in La Liga following the arrivals of Julio Baptista and Robinho.

Liverpool, who have a verbal first refusal on the striker, have predictably been linked with the striker as well as Manchester United, Newcastle United and Arsenal.

In a poll held on ShanklyGates.co.uk, readers were asked if they think Liverpool should attempt to resign Owen this summer.

A whopping 78.2% of voters said that they believe that the European Champions should make a move for Owen whilst just 21.8% voted against any such deal.

There are Liverpool fans who are still angered by Owen's failure to agree a new contract last summer, resulting in his cut price sale to Real Madrid.

But Owen is a proven Premiership striker who is pretty much guaranteed 20 plus goals a season if he stays injury-free.

Djibril Cisse is still pretty much an unknown quantity whilst there are doubts whether Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch are the sort of forwards who will top the goalscorers charts.

But with Owen in the squad, many Liverpool fans believe his goals could improve Liverpool's final league position considerably and move the Reds closer to the top.

Okay people, I said I would get back to you if and when I got any more news from my brother.  He has just told me this less than 10 minutes ago.

He has spoken verbally, man-to-man with Andy Owen today.  This is not any kind of hearsay, this is straight from the horses mouth if you like.  Again, if you don’t believe me, you know where you can go.  I am just passing on what Andy Owen (Michael Owen’s own brother) has told my brother today.

Liverpool have agreed terms with Real Madrid and Michael Owen VERBALLY that he will come back and play for us.  Not just on loan, neither, he will sign a permanent contract.  Andy Owen does not know any details about the fee, or how long the contract is for.

Newcastle made a bid this week and Owen knocked it flat back.  This prompted delegates to go out to Austria where Madrid are training, from BOTH Manchester United and Liverpool.  Owen has decided to join Liverpool.  He is in Liverpool as I type this on the hush-hush.

So far so good.

The ONLY thing that will fuck this transfer up is Real Madrid and their morals.  If Manchester United come in with a higher bid than Liverpool for Owen, Madrid will more than likely go back on their word with Liverpool and ask us to cough up more money if we want the player so bad, starting a bidding war.  Liverpool wont get involved in this.  We wont be charged over the odds for a player we have already agreed a fee with the sellers for.

So barring a late bid by Manchester United – and here’s what I’ve been dying to type in this post – he could be playing for us by Saturday at the Riverside.

Again, don’t shoot the messenger, it’s up to you whether you believe this, and the way Madrid have been when we have done business in the past makes me pessimistic myself, but it looks like we will have our man by Thursday everyone!!!

jonnymac your a don! i think it has been likely that Owen would be coming back all along since this specualtion started as whenever Rafa has been asked, he has not ONCE ruled out a move for Owen so if he wern't interested or things wern't goin on behind closed doors he would have just said like he has done with other players we have been linked with before.

Michael has to talk to Rafa and say listen ok, I was wrong I should'nt have left then Rafa will be very accepting but Michael knows deep down inside how wrong he was leaving his home, and Liverpool was his home, I remember I went to work in London as an au pair only lasted 2 weeks I thought f@ck that theres no place like home and ran back so fast, in these situations you have to remember whilst Michael Owen is earning 100 thousand a week to my hundred pounds the situation is still the same.
You get used to what you know he was idolised at Liverpool and never would have been no matter how many goals he scored for them.

He knows the club, he knows the town the players the owners he can trust with his life.
So what he had a break from us, we all need one at one time in our lives.
Welcome home Micky we luv ya
Now go an fire us to the premiership title

Now hopefully with Van Horseface scoring last night, Man utd won't be interested any more.

If it is to be

Then you have  ..

An Injured Crouch
An Out of form Fernando
A Goal machine Cisse
An out of favour poor Baros
A returned Owen.

So if no one offers the amount you want, Baros stays and you have 5 strikers when you play only 1 upfront?

Na, it'll be a devestating Cisse-Owen combo.

With Morientes and Crouch offering alternative combinations when needed
