in international play, it seems that having bombing fullbacks really completes your team. Imagine a left winger trying to mark Gerrard? The way Beckham plays at Milan his movement is from sort of a Xabi deep midfield role to advancing wide on the right to do what he does best.  This movement would open up space for Gerrard to bomb forward cutting inside, playing one-twos with Lampard and Rooney.  On the left, The Coles are more likely to move wide and then open up the space for Barry to fill on a run from midfield.

I guess it really comes down to how good is Owen when fit. I am not so sure he is good enough to start.  Owen is hurt so much that even in a fantasy "when everybody is fit" scenario, Owen still does pass his fitness test :D

He is good in any position he plays in. And I think in Istanbul he did play at RB at one point towards the end of the match. Having said that his best position will always be the position in which he is able to score and bring in others into the game - ie Torres. From that position he is proving to be devastating not only in scoring himself but generally causing chaos for the opposition, bringing in Torres ect....

He is England's best player so should be played in his best position which is attacking midfielder/striker. I agree with the bloke in the article above, the argument is no longer about Gerrard and Lampard playing in the same position but Gerrard and Rooney. I don't see Rooney as an out and out striker so something has to give - dropping Rooney? No; playing Rooney on the left midfied? No; leaving Rooney where he is and utilising Gerrard's better versatility elsewhere probably on the left? almost certainly.

I don't believe in picking a team's best player and building the team around that player. I believe in  building the team around the best team.

I believe in leaving Stevie out of the team but that's just me. :D

Anyway this England team needs someone to build it around it isn't capable of thinking for itself and hasn't done for years.
