Pass and move - The liverpool way!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Paul C » Sun Oct 29, 2006 9:51 am

So nice to see crisp passing yesterday, one thing we've lacked this season is movement off the ball and passing to feet, it's really been worrying me lately and against Man U we could make a pass and instead used the long ball which just isn't our game, fingers crossed we carry of improving the passing and keep hold of the ball, a commentator made a wise comment in a CL game the other day, he said that it's quite simple really that all successful teams keep the ball and that other teams can't score if that don't have it, simple really but makes sense, thats what we did yesterday instead if launching it to Crouch and look how much easier it was to destory teams.

Long may it continue  :buttrock

Very much agree with you Paul, I loved how Liverpool passed the ball against Villa, they indeed show some neat one- two passes, especially how garcia scored the 3rd goal, the build up was great

If we continue playing like what we did against Villa, our  oppositions will have a very big problem to think about.... however, we only managed to play well only for home games, not away...just hope we starts winning away games. One more thing, we need to sort out the defence. Letting easy goals regularly . However,  against villa, our defence was organised despite agbonlahor goal.

Anyway, satisfied with the performance, just hoping we keep this good run until the end of season. Keep up the good work lads!!!  :)

Just go into every game with the attitude of looking to win the game.  None of the tactics like at Bolton where we changed our system cos of the way Bolton were playing.  The majority of times we have the better players and there is no need to go into games with the attitude of looking not to get beat first.

Well everything that we did against Villa has just gone out the window, against Man U, Arsenal and yesterday against Boro their just wasn't anyone moving off the ball at all, if you watch the highlights from yesterday you can see people walking around off the ball not moving into space or overlapping, I think Paul Merson summed it up exactly when he said we played 'Subuteo football' :(

ive been saying the same for weeks - its anal.  our clubs simple philosophies should be enough. theres no need for all the fancy tricks and headless chicken use of the ball. get it- keep it -pass it- move it- bury it. end of puzzle.

Yep, dead right. Hence the reason why we kept passing back so much, we lost momentum so often despite keeping possession. What's the point of having 65% possession when you don't really create all that much?

I think its a better idea to pass it about our own half, then once we approach the opposing defenders, run out of ideas hit it back to our own defence who then hoofs it up the park in search of short @rse Bellamy, who either fails to get the ball or more often than not forgets one of the simplest rules in football......Offside!

The whole idea behind pass and move football is to pass the ball with purpose. Liverpool seem to be passing the ball because Rafa has told them to keep passing, not because we believe passing the ball will improve our chances of scoring. The ball is getting played around at the back not so much to allow our forwards and midfield players to make space for themselves but because this is the instruction they have been given. So we pass the ball about for a bit, then someone gets a challenge, panics and hoofs the ball 50yards up field. That is not pass and move, thats Wimbledon football with a bit more style and less purpose.

The idea behind long ball football is to miss out the midfield and catch the opposition unprepared. Not give the opposition defenders time to prepare and then launch it. We have good passers in midfield, more intelligent movement would allow our midfield to find them with purposefull balls instead of the high chips to small attackers we are now playing.

The main problem with pass and move is you need confidence to play it well, players have to run into space leaving their opponent unmarked and gambling that the pass will be a good one and we retain possession. When confidence is low(like now) players arnt making those runs they are too busy covering the opposition in case the move breaks down.
