Now or then? - Which do you prefer?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

i suppose this is aimed at the older supporters on here, the ones who remember the 60's, 70's and 80's.

i have been mulling over this but i cant really decide, but what era do you prefer?

was it more exciting when we were winning everything in sight and winning the league year after year or do you find it more exciting now with all the uncertainty about our games.

i cant decide whether i prefered knowing we were going to win games and at the end of the season the league title would follow, or do i prefer now not knowing if we will even beat southampton. i suppose age can alter my perceptions and expectations are diferent as you get older.

help me out here, which do you find more exciting, the certainty of yesteryear or the uncertainty of now

The old days had more mystique for me. I'm really only talking about the 80's here.

Wasn't so clinical then. (maybe it was and i was unaware). I loved some of the teams we played in those days that have since lost their standing, teams Like Forest, etc. These days there seems to be to much championship manager in everything. a certain aura is gone.

Then again some bad sh!t happened in those days as well.

Now is better I reckon, seems that LFC these days does everything the hard, gritty and determined way. I am more than happy with that.

if we be realistic the quality of football has vastly improved, from the stadiums, kits, football boots even right down to the ball they kick. this provides much more attractive and entertaining football not just for LFC but for the whole game. Ofcourse i love it when LFC win things, but i think whats most important is for all of us as the audience watch some quality entertaining football. so i much prefer this era as regards to the 80's

Between 77 & 81 were marvelous years. The football we played was astonishing at times. There was a game at anfield V spurs in 78 that was just superb, they had these new Argentinians, world cup winners no less and we just upped our game to level rarely seen or reached by anyone ever. We beat them 7-0 and the 7th goal involved a length of the pitch move which involved Kenny D, Stevie Highway and finished off with a classic header by Terry Mac. You people must root out footage from this game(its in colour, kids) sit back and enjoy. :)

older i think because of the buzz and the crack we had as mates growing up in school etc... the banter.

but strangely. the passing of time and having kids, a family mortgage etc...makes me look back to then with rose specs.
responsibility eh?    :D

although i of course LOVE it all now, purely so my two lads can watch their "puffed up with pride" (and pies!) dad.  :)

and learn all the ways of being a RED!!

so as i worshipped the faces of shanks and paisley....now we can ALL of us live through the RAFA years...... :bowdown

I would say the older years .The Dalglish era was great but, winning was a formality,it was taken for granted a lil bit .A lot of people compared that team to the great german team. But the Barnes /Beardsley era was the best because it was a changed style and some of the most exciting play id ever seen. Id compare that team to the great Brazilian team :D

The 70,s for me...My  first game aged 7 was in 1974 against Derby County and i stood with my uncle on the kop for the first time.I can still remember the buzz i had and even now writing this the hairs are standing up on my arms thinking about it.I was hooked after that, Keegan was my hero and then obviously Kenny.I was lucky enough to go to Rome in 1977 and Wembley in 1978 and that whole era for me will always be in my heart.I,m 38 now and recovering from my second cancer operation in the last 14 months and the memories of 1974 to 1984  especially are very deep embedded, especially when i sit and reflect which lately is very often.
Liverpool and that side in particular live in my heart  clemance, neal, hughes, keegan / dalglish  ,terry mac and the likes  made my childhood and teenage years. So yes although i loved the 80,s ,bits of the 90,s and our one night in may this year....the 70,s for me will never be beaten.

i'm young so i only really remember the eighties but i suppose you could pick a worse decade to be born in as far as a liverpool fan is concerned. i went to my first game in the 1989-90 season which was the last season in which we won the league. unfortunately, the time i started going coincided with the start of the sky era and our failure to take advantage.

having seen all the videos and archive footage, the 70's must have been as good as it got for a liverpool fan. winning our first european cup and then retaining it was a magnificent achievement.

Agree ,but back then a tackle was a tackle nowadays you get a yellow card for even stairing at your opponent in the wrong way.

Plus you have these oscar wininng actors who proceed to through themselves to the floor.(poofs)

Apart from that i agree.

i prefer football from the 80s. not so cynical and commercialise like today. although it is still very exciting, the chances of other teams causing an upset or winning major trophies are over.

Ah the six million dollar question rears its head again, many a happy hour has been spent pondering this one in hostelries up and down the country.Basically the rule of thumb is,if you are discussing it with someone older than yourself, they will always tell you the old days were the best days.If you are discussing it with someone from the same era thats when the fun begins.

I was taken to first game about 1968/69 by my Dad a short walk across Stanley Park from our home in Walton,I can still picture it now.The houses that back onto the alleyway that runs from the King Harry pub, up to the ground used to charge fans to leave their bikes in there backyards, imagine that nowadays going the match on a pushbike and shoving your bycicle clips in your pocket. The Kop was the first and best football terrace I ever stood on,and it broke my heart when they put seats on it.At that time the kop also housed the boys pen,a section that was penned off in the top right hand corner many alad took his life in his hands climbing out and into the rafters of the mighty Kop.

In those days there was limited TV coverage of football, the only live games were the FA Cup final and the World cup every four years.Every Saturday before going to the match everybody would watch football focus then turn over to watch on the ball, the interviews with Shanks were always listened to in hushed rooms in case anybody missed a word,of what the great man was saying. As I got older I followed my beloved Liverpool all over the country and Europe losing jobs along the way and loving every second of it,even when coming within millimeteres of losing an eye at one particularly violent day out at Birmingham City.

I have been lucky enough to see some great players over the years Keegan,Toshack,Dalgleish Souness,Alan Hansen to name but a few,and witnessed a trophy haul as long as my arm but I still havent answered the question! its simply because I cant.

I have great memories but Iam sure the achievments of the side Rafa is putting together will become great memories in the future.I wasnt in Istanbul on that magical night in May and that my friends is the biggest regret of my life.Like everything football has moved on not all for the better but in some respects it has.In the main we have kissed goodbye to hooliganism and racism is on the wane.We can sit in some degree of comfort and not be worried abot standing in urine in a pair of decent shoes.Although football on a Sunday and Monday night still gets my back up.

So the good old days,or present day,There is no choice to make I just count myself lucky to support the most succsesful team in the country, that has given me so much pleasure over the years with plenty more to come.
