NEWCASTLE VS LIVERPOOL - BUILD UP HERE

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JC_81 » Sun Mar 19, 2006 12:58 pm

Another important game for us today, no question.  United and the teams just below us all won yesterday so we really could do with picking up the 3 points.

Newcastle's defence is bad, we all know that, but they're not as bad as some on here are making out and they've certainly looked a better defensive unit since Souness left.  That combined with our well documented problems scoring would suggest this will be a tight game.

I expect Gerrard to get back on track today, we certainly need him to step it up with Momo out and Alonso suspended still.  Up front I'd recall Crouch, his hold up play away from home is good and will come in handy today as it will benefit us to bypass Newcastle's decent midfield by at times looking long.

We'll certainly create chances today, whether we can convert them is the key, but I predict a narrow 2-1 to us.

I'd go with:

                             Reina

Finnan       Carra           Hyypia              Warnock

Kromkamp   Hamann      Gerrard           Kewell

                Crouch        Fowler

I wonder if Rafa will rotate the squad again to day with the FA Cup in mind? It's absolute bollox having to play again on Tuesday. I've got a feeling this one will finish 1-1 and i wouldn't be too down with that. Untill the mancs game Newcastle have been playing well under Roeder and they'll have a big crowd behind them. I'd like to see Crouch and Fowler start this one but think the boss might go with Morientes again. Am gutted Jonny Riise is still out. We've really missed him.

We've kicked goals without Crouch in the starting lineup in the last game so why start him again, this Crouch & Fowler combo does not work!

My hunch is that if Cisse plays, he will have a blinder and score. Talk about putting your neck on the block predicting that from Cisse but I think he'll cause their defence all sorts of problems.

To be honest Mick, thought something very similar myself. If Cisse plays a central striking role he could indeed......

Hope you're right Mick

It wouldn't surprise me if Cisse pulled a good performance out of his ar.se today.  I'd rather Fowler had started alongside Crouch but I'm also glad Morientes isn't starting.

In fact I'm puzzled Fowler isn't starting, especially as he's cup-tied for Tuesday so he won't be playing then either.

Also a strange decision to move Carra from CB.  The only other option is that he's playing 3 at the back with Warnock and Kromkamp as wing backs, but I really can't see that.

Anyone else think we may use the wing back system today?

                          Reina

              Carrgher Hyypia Agger
Kromkamp                                Warnock

            Gerrard Hamann Kewell

                 Crouch Cisse

or like this:

                           Reina

              Carrgher Hyypia Agger
Kromkamp                                Warnock

                Gerrard Hamann
     Cisse                            Kewell
                     Crouch
