Match report from yesterday...

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I have to now, everytime we play. :)

Kirkland - 6. Done ok, didn't have much to do, could have dealt with the freekick better imo but wasn't really troubled, done what was required.

Finnan - 6. One of his worst games this season and was still decent, got forward alot and defended well but was largely ineffective.

Carragher - 8. Brilliant tackles, helped create a goal, was everywhere at the back and is becoming an oustanding centre half. Getting better every game. Simple as that.

Hyypia - 7. Good game, made one of two mistakes, but alwways cool under pressure, wins all his headers and makes some amazing interceptions.

Traore - 5. Not his best game of the season, he's still a centre half, not a left back. Was sloppy on the ball and was not contributing to the match.

Nunez - 5. Tried hard, needs to settle, not convinced he looks a great player from what i've seen. Still, its early days.

Alonso - 7. Passing was great, tried to hard once or twice but dictated the pace of the game.

Gerrard - 7. Not his most effective performance but done well. Looked a bit disinterested at times if i'm honest... reminding me of someone a bit... hopefully its just down to fitness... great strike for the goal though, amazing.

Riise - 6. Not a left sided midfielder, looked far better at left back. Decent game, nothing spectacular, bit sloppy in possession at times again though.

Kewell - 7. Best game of the season by far but still room for improvement. Worked hard and was excellent for our first goal, thats what we signed him for, outstanding wing play and looked a bit more confident. Was still sloppy in possession but there was a definate improvement. Hopefully it'll continue (i'm not counting on it though).

Baros - 6. Worked hard but couldn't find a way through. His goal was rightly dissalowed and it was a good decision to substitute him. He was tired and becoming ineffective. Needs to develope his game intelligence if he's to become a class player.

Subs...

Pongolle - 9. M.O.M. Brilliant!!! Good goal, full of pace trickery and skill. Was direct and clever and shown his potential for the first time this season. Made up with the lad. Best game in a Liverpool shirt and done it under incredible circumstances.

Mellor - 8. Came on an scored, set a goal up and worked really hard. Done exactly what we needed...

Josemi... wasn't on long enough to get a mark. :p

I think I have to say that I pretty much agree with all of that and it is an accurate assessment of the match.

Troare had a game reminiscent of his bad old days. He's not cut out to get down the line as he has no balance and getting to the touch line and whipping the ball in is simply not part of his game.

Nunez was quiet all night, although fair play to him getting the header on the ball that led to Mellor's goal. He got into it more in the second half but he's a bit lightweight at the moment and lacks match sharpness. He'll have to toughen up to improve.

Gerrard was very sloppy at times and was hitting ridiculous short passes to players' chests, which was unnecessary. Frustration got the better of him for a period in the second half and if we are to be objective, he should have walked for his two x-rated tackles.

Pongolle was excellent when he came on, as was Mellor. Mellor didn't get too many touches on the ball but the touches he got were first class.

Succinct and fair Stu. If posting was the same as playing, you'd be going through something of a hot streak right now. Banging the goals in, getting a few assists and your attributes (I know you love them) would be on the way up. You'd have moved from the very good category into the class player category or however it is you look at it. I'm just dying for you to say something daft so I can come in with "you've got no knowledge of football whatsoever". Classic.  :D

Baros was well marked so it was hard for him to get a sniff of the goal. His first game since his injury so can't really slate him for the performance.

Agree about Pongo - clear MOTM, he looked brilliant and more importantly like he was enjoying himself. His attitude was spot-on last night and reflects well on Rafa's managerial skills

Is there no end to Rafa's talent for re-igniting the flames of seemingly lost Anfield careers?  :)

Sinama-Pongolle also shown maturity at the end of the game by running into the corners. Normally inexperienced players would try and attack teams there and he took on board the game was won and done his best to ensure it stayed that way.

Brilliant stuff.
