He cut through the Walsall defence and when his cross was headed clear by Scott Dann it was fiercely volleyed into the back of the net by the waiting Anderson

MIXED FORTUNES FOR YOUNG REDS

  Liverpool's Under-18s endured mixed fortunes during the Villareal youth tournament in Spain, but despite not winning a match the Academy players can take a lot of heart from their overall performances. 
The Reds faced Real Madrid, Sevilla and host team Villarreal in the four team competition and, despite losing three out of four games, the team showed plenty of promise for the season ahead and gave good accounts of themselves against more experienced opposition.
 
Indeed, Liverpool had the youngest team on view in matches that were played on a 30 minutes each way basis.
 
The young Reds were unlucky to lose their first match as they were edged out 3-2 by Madrid. German starlet Marvin Pourie and Steve Irwin were on target for Liverpool.
 
The Reds then lost their next match 1-0 to hosts Villareal and also suffered defeat in their third match to Japanese team Urawa Reds. However, they dominated their final game against Sevilla but just couldn't find the net and had to settle for a goalless draw.
 
Academy Manager John Owens told Liverpoolfc.tv: "This was our third year competing in the Villarreal tournament and it was a very good fitness exercise for the players.
 
"We took a squad of 20 players with us to Spain and all of them managed to get a game and build up their match sharpness. We enjoy coming here for this tournament and it's good because you play four games in consecutive days.
 
"We now start at Aston Villa on Saturday and everyone is raring to go."

would of liked to see the under 18s do better. shows how far we r behind other clubs youth wise

Well we had scored 4 goals in each of the other youth games this season, and we won back to back FA youth cups.  These were only 60 minute games played in Spain every day, from the quotes it sounds more like the youth coach was interested in getting the players fit for the season than winning.

Hartlepool missed some good first half chances as they spent long spells in the Doncaster half, but defender Godwin Antwi headed in off the underside of the crossbar just before half-time.



Yeovil picked up their first points of the season thanks to an early goal from new recruit Justin Cochrane in a 1-0 win over Port Vale.

In the 17th minute the former Rotherham midfielder converted an excellent cross from Ritchie Jones, another debutant signed on loan during the week from Manchester United.

The move was started by veteran Marcus Stewart, who worked hard to keep the Glovers in front after their horrendous Carling Cup exit at Hereford.

Further chances fell to Lee Peltier and Craig Alcock but Vale should have equalised when Danny Whitaker broke clear only to see his close-range shot rebound off the legs of goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall.


Jimy Ryan was on the subs bench for Shewsbury after making his debut in the Carling Cup midweek.

Paletta gone out on Loan


Paletta "Very Happy" With Boca Move

Argentine defender Gabriel Paletta, who was loaned out to Boca Juniors from Liverpool, feels that his latest move isn’t going a step backwards.

Paletta, who arrived in Argentina on Saturday to join the Boca squad, affirmed that playing for the Argentine giants “is highly important for any player, and that “it doesn’t matter if some say it is going backwards or not”.

The young defender wasn’t given many opportunities by Rafael Benitez at Anfield, and was keen on a move back to Argentine football, even though it means he will be returning to a somewhat inferior league.

Despite this he said, “I’m very happy to join such a big club in Argentina. The expectations are huge. Now I will try my best to get into shape quickly so I can be ready for the manager”.

The 21 year old, who helped Argentina win the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup, told reporters that he is in good physical condition after “doing the entire pre-season with Liverpool”.

Paletta understands the fact that Boca have the most demanding fans in the whole of Argentina, and he knows "Boca’s fans expect only the best”.

The youngster concluded: “I will do my best to help the club fight for all the tournaments they participate in, and will try to help win them”.
