LIVERPOOL VS PORTSMOUTH - in game/post match reaction

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I was disappointed about the result of course we all like to win, but the performace was great and showed potential.

For the doom and gloom merchants, think about the link up between the new boys and the team, it looked good, Babel looked dangerous moving in on Alonsos long passes and over time they will learn one and others style of play and the timing of passes and runs will become a lot better, Babels pace looked to be dnagerous and i though his ball retention was good at times during the match.

Obviously Torres didnt play much more than 30 minutes and granted didnt look to sharp but he still managed to show some good attacking and creative skill to create some chances which he will probably put away once he is match fit and settled in the team.

They both look like good players and im sure they will fit in better with time.

As for Sissoko and Alonso, they both ran the show, they were great sissoko showed some better skill at ball retention and his first touch looked better than it has been, to be honest he looked like a attacking threat in todays game making some good runs forward, saying that i would rather have had Alonso making those runs  :p

Once again Alonso showed that if Gerrard is not in the team he steps up his game and take centre stage to fill in for him, he may not be a box to box player like Gerrard but he can certainly pull the strings in midfield with out having to worry about covering Stevies attacking runs forward.

Was a good performance and we showed with a bit more work we can crack any team trying to play negative defensive football against us.

This is how i interpreted the game probably different to some hehe

Why does the strikers come deep??

Cause our central midfield is so **** defensive.
That leaves a big hole in the middle where a central mid should be to help push forward.
Even if it was a pre season game is was so very similar to our Pompey game at home last season.

Same style of play, same slow pace to the game and the same inefficient result.

Our attacking play is 90% dependant on our wingers since we play:

RB   CB    CB    LB

      DMC   DMC
RW                  LW
       F        F

And often one forward will drop deep in front of the very defensive central midfield making it even less attacking.
Way too slow and defensive minded style. It didn't work last season and it will not work this season.
And Kuyt may be hard working but his finishing is woeful at times and never going to be top notch.
Rafa may be a great tactical genious and a very good manager but sometimes he likes hardworking robotlike players
a bit too much. The final ball is always lacking and that class and pace in the deciding moments are not there.
I just hope we change until the season start or we might as well write 0-0 vs Villa in the 1st game.
More emphasis on the attack! Can't play to be afraid to loose all the time...

I'm not bothered at all that we lost. Today it was more about the performance, and from what I seen, we looked top class and certainly a class or two above Pompy. We looked much fitter, sharper, more technical, and at times some of our football was a real spectacle to watch. If anyone wants to judge Babel and Co. from one game or more in a pre-season game, then they need to broaden their perspective a little.

Pennant was outstanding. I think that's the best I've ever seen him play in a red shirt. Babel and Kuyt's movement in front of the ball was also top class, and how Kuyt didn't score at least one goal is anyone's guess. Very promising stuff on how we played, and taking a look at our bench in that first half, it's hard to imagine a stronger bench in the world, nevermind in the EPL. I expect this squad to be challenging for everything once they click and silence the doubters, and that includes many of our very own fans, unfortunately. We have to believe that we are a great team in the making, and if us, the fans believe in it, then hopefully the players will too. And if they do, God help our rivals, because that's exactly what Liverpool will be once again.

Oh yeah, one last thing to say -  Paul Merson is a sh*t stabbing w'anker!

That means they'll win the League we should just give up.  :D

you jest but you may have noticed Nani getting one of the goals, why has he been able to settle in so easily when our big money youngster looks rubbish??

Jeez I'm depressed about the forthcoming season already. I want to win dammit what's wrong with that??? And if we can play some exciting football at the same tiem then all the better. Why are our strikers unable to finish, what is the deal with that, do we have a striker coach, if not then maybe we need one, and I don't mean Rush ;-)

I knwo this match wasn't high profile but ina way it was because the whole of the far east watched their beloved Liverpool loose, and that isn't cool!!

There's a bit of a difference between Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals and Portsmouth though isn't there. Should we go and play TNS just to make our new players look like footballing gods?

Seriously, when's this gonna stop. Sissoko had a cracking game and his passing for the most part was acurate. He even played a cracking Xabi-like 30 yarder into space to put Kuyt in down the left wing. Give the guy a break.

Come on mate you may not agree with him but theres no need to slate his own opinions however drastic they may be. The lad is obviously annoyed at the way weve played our pre season matches winning 4 of 5 and only losing the last one on pens is hard to take.

Bad to lose on a penalty shootout, but it doesn't matter.

Overall I was pretty pleased with the performance. Momo was excellent.

Much to be optimistic about. I thought we played very well.

It annoys me. Seriously, you wouldn't even get more stick from a Man U fan than some of the so called supporters in here are giving the team at the moment. We lost a pre-season game? So f'ckin what? Already people have made their minds up about the new signings and have thrown unwarranted critism already before a ball has been kicked officially. It makes me even wonder if they are supporters of the team or not. You are meant to stick with the team through thick and thin. It's one thing to give an opinion, but to come flat out and blast the team like that is just rediculous without backing anything up with valid points. This game was not a baptism of fire, nor was it the litmus test for our season to come, so why jump the gun and run your own team down? I just don't get it at all. Some people just seem to concentrate too much on any negative, and for each minor negative, it seems to outweigh a possitive 10 fold. The truth is, that there were far more possitives than negatives from this game, and that's the way I see it. When the Negatives outweigh the possitives, then you at least have the right to moan.

Give it up dude. You really think that LFC wouldn't have stuffed Pompey in a truly competitive Prem game? How many serious matches have water breaks and the TV cameras looking for nice looking girls in the crowd? It was just a friendly in hot humid weather.

i cannot for the life of me realise what makes a genuine fan start ripping into a team after a pre season friendly in hong kong,(ITS JUST A FRIENDLY)It  wasnt exactly the champions league final.I for one think liverpool have looked pretty promising,Are these the same fans that if we would of won today by 2 or 3 goals, would of been saying were dead certs for the prem?.The only time we can judge this current squad(the most exciting ive seen since we last won the league) is next may.just wait and dont be so fickle!!!!!! :O

torres comes deep
kuyt comes deep
voronin comes deep

Absolutely clueless. what game were you watching? Babel did ok out there today, he made a lot of bright (often selfless) runs through the channels and in behind, kept the ball and showed some nice touches. Oh, and while you're bemoaning our lack of a strikers to play on the shoulder, this is in fact, exactly what he did for the entire first half. :no

What on earth is the big fuss about.  People, this is a freindly nothing more.  Sure we lost the Asia Cup to Portsmouth (it would have been nice to add a cup to the cabinet in even at this stage) but the fans that are complaining already...............  must be out of their minds.  Again I tell you, this was a friendly to get the lads going for the season ahead.

Didn't Chelsea only beat Becks team by 1 goal or something?  Becks only played a small part too.  Thats not the point, regardless of whether we lose or not the people at the game will know what is a strong liverpool side and whats not, fans who give up on a team after seeing one game are better off not supporting the team i love.  They saw an entertaining game dominated by us, and a unlucky penalty loss.  At least it will drive us to smash pompey on both legs this year, and gets a loss out of the road before the season starts.

Sissoko had some awesome runs and just plain bossed the midfield i'm glad emerald mentioned this, cos if you saw the match even the commentators were saying how immense he was.  Did anyone see crouchy get slapped on the forehead when the camera turned to him? It looked like he blamed the wrong person for slapping him. :D
