I couldn't believe the lineup but KK saved it with his substitutes today. You can't lineup that negatively against the mancunts at home with their problems.

Come on, I don't think Kenny's that soft.  He's had the stones to drop Carra to the bench for most of the season, after all.

To me, the move was designed to shield the defence without hindering Gerrard and Henderson's ability to bomb forward.  Against Bolton, Gerrard, Hendo and Adam all pushed up, leavinh large gaps in front of the defence and giving their midfield runners a lot space to create problems.  I think Kenny had that in mind today, knowing he wanted Gerrard and Hendo to get forward.  So, Adam sits on the subs bench and in comes Carra to shield the back four.  Unfortunately, it didn't work all that well.  It did manage to clog up the middle and give Scholes, Giggs and Carrick very few passing channels to work (there only joy came down our left flank, with Valencia giving Enrique a lot to deal with).  But, it really hurt us going forward and seemed to really hinder our ability to get hold of the ball and get our passing rhythm going.  We looked a far better side when Adam and Kuyt came on.

Say that again, MH.

Takes some balls to bring off Gerrard for Adam at home to the Manc's, but I thought he brought some much needed needed composure and tempo to our midfield, something I think we had lacked for most of the match, while Kuyt was unceasing in his commitment to the cause and did so well to read Carroll's knock-on and then finish it.

In truth it didn't take any balls. It was a pre-determined change. Stevie is in continuous dialogue with Kenny over his fitness, and he calls the shots as to how long he plays (he stated after the game he felt knackered so soon after the City game), so hes either told Kenny during half time/early 2nd half that he wont make the last 25 minutes. Hes not long back after quite a long lay off so Kenny is well aware we need to be careful and not ask too much.

Although we got the result which is all that matters, Kenny got it badly wrong today the selection of Carragher. For the first 63 minutes we had him playing central midfield, against Paul Scholes; no surprise we barely got a kick. Thankfully they had no one (Rooney, Young, Nani) at the sharp end to convert their dominance in possession into goals. When Adam came on we started to get more of a hold of the ball and attacked more frequently. None of us mind if we make mistakes in team selection, play badly, and win...we'd all take that every week, unfortunately but it doesn't happen often. He did redeem himself bigtime with the subs though so credit to Kenny for that.

Fair points re. Gerrard, but when you're playing probably your fiercest rivals at home in a cup game on which so much of your season depends and looking for inspiration in the attacking third, then it's no easy decision to withdraw the one player who's been the man to provide just that on so many previous occasions. It was a question of balancing the risk of injury if he'd continued playing against the loss of his presence on the pitch, and in my opinion that couldn't have been an easy to decision to make. Obviously, though, if the signs are that there is a real risk of re-injury if he stays on for the remaining 20 min's then it's an easier decision to make.

On your second point, I agree.

He took out Gerrard for Bellamy :;):

Plus, we were crying out for Adam and Kuyt to come on because Carragher at DM wasn't working and Maxi was quite for most of the game, the 2 changes (Kuyt and Adam) changed the game, we kept the ball even more. I agree about the Gerrard one, it was a gamble, but he did look tired.

is right.

thought aftyer the subs we dominated. before that, the game was passing us by somewhat, especially in midfield.

it was a brave selection from the start. saw the lineup and was confused as to whether we were playing 3 at the back or carra in midfield, considering he started his career there. all in all i think it made us solid if not spectacular. thought adam did well when he came on although throughout the whole game we were severely lacking width unless it came from the fullbacks. even then, kelly is nowhere near in the same class as johnson going forward. downing on the right just doesn't work.

defence was still immense though and it's another great result. onwards and upwards!

i rather he play Spearo as DM,
local lad as well and a small but tough fighter (same as Bellers).
we need committed players like them. (Stevie, Carra etc etc)
and DM is he natural position,

Spearing just came back from injury and not 100% fit, so Carragher as DM might be a gamble but at least we gave it a try. In the previous games we had a lot of space behind our midfield being exposed because we did not have someone sitting there protecting the backfour.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has revealed he turned down an enquiry from Liverpool counterpart Kenny Dalglish about pushing their game back because of the transfer window.

The two sides will meet at Molineux in the Premier League on Tuesday night - which is also transfer deadline day.

McCarthy says Dalglish contacted him requesting to change the game to the following day due to Liverpool's potential business in the transfer market.

But the Wolves manager refused because he wanted more time to prepare for Saturday's trip to QPR.

He said: "I know Liverpool wanted to play the game on the Wednesday and asked me about it and I said 'no chance'.

"We are going down to QPR on Saturday so why would I play a day later? I want as much time to prepare for both games but I could understand Liverpool's request.

"Kenny just asked me because they might be doing something (in the transfer market) and I understood it - but he understand my reasons for not changing."

Solution

Wolves were not in action at the weekend after being knocked out of the FA Cup by local rivals Birmingham in the third round.

McCarthy and his players went paintballing during their 10-day break but not far from his mind has been trying to find a solution to end a run of 10 games without a win.

He said: "The paintballing day wasn't about digging deep to find good team spirit because that is there. That was a day off from training because we hadn't got a game at the weekend, a break from the norm.

"But we are digging deep trying to do something about the results. If we weren't, there would be something wrong.

"I shouldn't be here if I wasn't trying to find a spark, something we could get results from. We are doing that all the time.

"What I can do is take positives from how we've played at Arsenal, Spurs, Bolton in the second half, Chelsea, and Aston Villa."

Kenny says that there will be no transfer dealings this window but still asked for the game to move forward so he could concentrate on the deadline  ???

I’m guessing he asked several weeks back when there was a possibility of us doing some business.

Tough game against City mid week followed by another tough one on Saturday. Transfer window aside not surprised if Kenny just wanted an extra 24hrs  before the players had to take to the field again.
