Gerard and rafa - Best/worst signings

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Who in your opinion was Houllier and Benitez' best/worst signings?

IMO for Houllier the best has to be Sami who at 2.6 million has to be one of the best steals ever, so many good seasons and still going strong and now a Liverpool legend.

His worse signing? Well thats easy, step forward Mr. Diao! Need I say more?

As for Rafa....

His best was Alonso, a fantastic passer of the ball and one of the best midfielders in the world and how much would he be worth now? A masterstroke....

And his worse, im going to go with Josemi, he really looked the part when he arrived put faded away worse than the Americans at the Ryder cup!

Your opinions please gentlemen......

Best Houllier signing - Sami without question.

Worst - Diouf.

Rafa best - Alonso. Definately.

Worst - Nunez. He was b*llocks, but to be fair, Rafa didn't want him anyway.

I know - he's a waster, but at least he didn't bring shame on the club, which is always a good thing! :D

Both useless b*stards in their own right, though.

Rafa: Alonso/Fowler.  Josemi as the worst.
Gerard: I reckon Didi is up there with Sami.  Worst... take your pick.  I'd say Diouf.

I think Red Red Tom meant Rafa's best signing was between Alonso or Fowler (he perhaps can't choose between the 2).

For me, Houllier's best signing was Sami and worst has to be Diouf.

As for Rafa, the best is Alonso and the worse was Nunez. At least Josemi had somedecent performance, although these accpetable performances were very few and far between.

Houllier: Best = Hyypia/Riise
         : Worst = Diouf

Rafa: Best = Gerrard (IMO is the BEST signing of our history!)
: Worst = Morientes (Big Name, failed delivery. Even though I loved watching this guy, am still unsure as to what the he11 happened!!)

Just to play devils advocate with a different slant. Houlliers best signing, (he did make a couple) in the current context would be John Arne Riise. Four million quid for a bloke who still is young and would be worth twice that in todays market. His worst ones are numerous, with the five million pounds we paid for Diao and the ten for Diouff at best an absolutely staggering piece of misjudgement, and at worst well..... Bruno Cheyrou was another. Failure to settle, aclimatize etc is one thing but a basic and obvious lack of ability is quite another. All these players make the fourteen million pounds we paid for Cisse who could at least run quite fast, look like the steal of the century.

Rafa's worst as a stand out was Morientes, although most if not all of us were pretty excited when he arrived so it's not necessarily the managers fault. His best two for the money are Agger and Sissoko, both who would be worth in excess of twice what we paid for them if we got rid tomorrow. Crouch and Alonso have both appreciated in value and it's hard to imagine us selling Kuyt for nine million anytime soon aswell. Aurelio is a really good player in my opinion and the best signing on a free made by any Premiership club in a long time, including Sol Campbell. Suffice to say I think the manager we've got now is infinately superior to the one he replaced.
