Former skipper to retire - Jamie redknapp

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JC_81 » Mon Jun 13, 2005 9:15 pm

Southampton midfielder Jamie Redknapp is set to announce his retirement in the next few days after a long battle with knee problems. (Daily Express)

Haven't read the full article, but would be sorry to see this if it is true.  One of the best passers of the ball i have seen at this club in recent years and was truly international class in his prime.

He is a player that i feel had the talent to go on and captain england but unfortunately never reached his full potential due to injury.  Maybe he'll follow his dad into management, wouldn't be surprised.  Good luck to him anyway

i was just thinking about redknapp today and watched a bit of footage from '97. he was a fantastic player and would definitely be being hailed as one of this countries finest players if he'd stayed clear of the injuries. a real shame for all concerned.

Yes best of luck Jamie, very unlucky through out his career but could take cracking free-kick something we miss with today's squad.

Redknapp showed flashes in the early Houllier days of being a class midfielder but as everyone else here has said, injuries wrecked him.

I saw him play for Southampton v. Man UTD on the last day of the season. His body looked shattered.........he looked like an old aged pensioner trying to compete......very sad.

I always thought Jamie redknapp was an easy target at liverpool when the reality was that he was far from the leat effective player in the team at the time but the Boo Boys in the Centnary Stand had it in for him and thats a shame cos he was quality and the best passer of the ball i'vepersonally seen in a Liverpool shirt until Xabi Aklonso arrived last season.

Wish him well as many do on here and can see him in the Sporting media in the near future.

i always like redknapp as a player, great technique and passing range, sadly as we all know countless injurys took their toll and he never managed to get back to his form of old, in fact he rarely completed a season without injury if i remember correctly, shame though as he had great talent and could have been huge.

Yea feel sorry for him too, he had great vision and could have struck a nice partnership with stevie g if things had been different for him. However its all if's ands, and buts now, which is a shame but good luck to him, whatever he does.

At his peak Redknapp would have excelled if he had the likes of Gerrard alongside him.  His midfield partnership with John Barnes was light weight.  It was ridiculous playing the two of them alongside each other.
I reckon we'll see alot of Redknapp in the media. He is to mild mannered and doesn't appear ruthless enough to be a manager.
