Foreign Stars, what if you were one of them ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

There you are at the top of your game and you're being mentioned as one of the leading performers in world football.

Apart from obviously wanting to fulfil your career ambitions on the pitch with a club that will help you achieve that aim you've also got to consider your family and lifestyle outside of the club.

No disrespect to Liverpool as a city (I was born and raised there) or the club with it's glorious history BUT unless you've got Liverpool running through your veins why would you choose to live your life alongside the brown waters of the Mersey in a club that for some time now has been treading water when, top table football aside, the night life, culture and sunshine of cities throughout Europe are available to you ?

Maybe if you're born and bred in the UK none of the above matters to you but I'm of the mind that with one or two exceptions when it comes to "foreign stars" until we are able to dominate football as we once did we'll just be a stepping stone for up and coming players from other climes to hone their skills and reputations before they go on to greater things.

As fans regretfully it's something we may have to get used to.  :(

Modern players look for two things within the game - success and money. We can't offer the first currently - and we can't compete against the big financial players.

When it comes to players picking teams - we are going to have to pull some rabbits out of hats or stump up some big wages.

City got big players without CL through big money , Monaco are currently getting big players without CL through big money - the reason why is the players know the success is coming to follow after.

We are so far behind the big players in the top leagues

We used to be part of it but we aren't even in the big 4 in the prem at the moment.

We really need a big summer and a big season coming up - I'm not sure if we will have the squad to do it plus the management achieve what we need. The longer we are away from the CL the further we will drift away

I see your point mate but not all players are greedy, money hungry tw@ts no matter what some people say and LFC still has a world reputation which can tempt decent players from all over the place.
We only have to look at man city to see that paying well over the odds for the "best" players is no guarantee of repeated success, and this season we have seen the "Mighty" madrid humbled by a german team in the CL and even the unbeatable barca with all their galacticos spanked by the eventual (german) winners. Football changes constantly and although I agree at the minute we are treading water and are a fair bit away from dominating as we did in the past, I believe if we get good, determined, passionate, committed and talented players, then we will make ground on those above us and eventually bring back some of the glory days we enjoyed in the past. We have to believe that we can become a force again and stop bigging up other teams at our own expense. No, we are not the LFC of the 70s, 80s, or 90s, but we are improving and progressing slowly, and will continue to do this with patience and support for the manager and the team.
As far as the climate and the nightlife are concerned, Liverpool is one of the hottest citys in europe right now and the destination for all the "A" lister clebs, according to the papers. Besides, when those scouse girls grab you, who gives a fu'ck what the weathers like!

Which players aren't greedy money grabbing ***** ? And it's more than just wanting money - it's wanting glory as well - the glory of playing against the top teams and top players , the glory of picking up medals and playing in big games.

Madrid and Barce still got to the semi finals in the CL - Bayern themselves spent millions on buying players , Dortmund still spent millions buying players and both teams will continue to spend. Goetze is a prime example - has just left Dortmund for Munich for lots more money.

Barce are just spending millions for Neymar ! All the top quality players are going to the top quality teams and for big money. That is what is tempting players - the top players - money and success.

City won two trophies in 3 seasons and are just starting out - they will again challenge this season , Chelsea have been constantly winning trophies over the last 10 years since the Russian arrived , to win the title the Mancs spent over £24mil for a 29 year old !

Money talks in football now. If you want the talented players then we need to pay for them , to attract the talented players we need to play in the top competitions.

Currently our attraction is low - we will struggle to compete for the players with real quality. We are being overtaken at an alarmingly rate currently.

Next year when the talk is about the title challengers we won't be in it , when the talk is about the top 4 we will be classed as an outside bet alongside the BS - that's how low our stock is currently.

If Cristiano Ronaldo is the young footballers role model then of course Woof is right, LFC, our city and weather are just stepping stones towards Madrid, Barcelona or Milan. There is little loyalty when agents are provoking interest and determined to put money before football. Such is the nature of the modern game.

If you consider a WHOLE team at the same cost as one Andy Carroll, then yes I suppose they are "spending millions"

Weidenfeller- Free Transfer
Subotic- £5,000,000
Hummels- £3,350,000
Piszczek- Free Transfer
Schmelzer- Academy
Sven Bender- £5,000,000
Ilkay Gundogan- £4,000,000
Lewandowski- £3,600,000
Mario Gotze- Academy
Marco Reus- £14,000,000

Dortmund Total Value- £34,950,000

Andy Carroll Value- £35,000,000
Champions of England 2020.

I dont believe for one minute that all young fotballers have Ronaldo as their role model.
Steven Gerrard is probably a bigger role model to many more young players.
And guess who he plays for...?

Don't underestimate the role of the WAGS. If they are happier in London or Milan then they will make it happen more times than not. A player is only happy if things are good at home. Happy WAG, happy player.
