Cisse to leave Liverpool

Tue, 30 Aug 2005
French international striker Djibril Cisse could be set to join 2004 Champions League finalists Monaco on loan from Champions League holders Liverpool, it was revealed on Monday.

If 24-year-old Cisse were to sign — which he has to do before the transfer window closes on Wednesday — it would likely open the way for England international Michael Owen to rejoin his former club from Real Madrid.

Cisse, who scored two goals in Liverpool's 3-1 victory over CSKA Moscow in the European Super Cup last Friday, has also been subject of interest from Monaco's rivals Marseille, who are struggling at the bottom of the league.

However, a Marseille official told AFP that they were no longer interested.

"We didn't really get in on the act because we believe Cisse was loaned to Monaco on Monday for a sum of around €4-million," the source told AFP.

Monaco denied this, but their vice-president Gerard Brianti did admit they would be interested in signing the 17-times capped striker.

"He is an interesting player, and no club would refuse to have him," said Brianti, who is in charge of signings.

Cisse, whose partnership with Milan Baros never really fired last season at Liverpool, though the Frenchman was out for a long time after suffering a horrific broken leg, said he would not leave Liverpool unless he was asked to do so should Owen be bought.

Owen held talks with both Liverpool and Newcastle on Monday, but it is believed while the latter team offered Real £17-million, his former team are prepared to offer just £8-million.

Cisse, scorer of 15 goals in 39 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Auxerre in 2004, will not be eligible to play for Monaco in the UEFA Cup because he has already played in the Champions League this term.

they can pay a fee to have him for the year on top of wages.

Prepare for another year of 451 formations if Cisse really does leave and clearly Owen is already out of our reach.

Well now that Owen has signed for Newcastle, this thread is now GIBBERISH!! I would steer clear of any more of this garbage, pity, I know that this thread was created before Owen's move, but come on, how ridiculous is it to think Cisse was ever going to move on?

Rafa can´t be stupid enough to ship off Cissé, can he? If Cissé leaves we will be left fighting for a uefa-cup place.

Nah, Cisse should stay now.

Even if Owen arrived, I would have still wanted LFC to keep Cisse.

I know that Morientes better get his @$$ in gear though.
