Champions league - Straight in?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby red37 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 12:08 pm

liverpool could be entered straight into the group phase.

Liverpool could be set to replace Olympicos in the Champions League after Greek football was suspended from international competition.

Fifa has suspended European champions Greece and its member clubs from international competition because of government interference in the sport.

World governing body Fifa said the Hellenic Football Federation had broken rules on "the independence of members and decision-making in each country".

It means Greek clubs and officials are banned from European competitions.

The suspension will be in place with "immediate effect and until further notice", according to a Fifa statement.

Although Greek officials are believed to be working furiously behind the scenes, Liverpool currently sit as the top ranking team in the 3rd qualifying stage. If the FIFA ban remains in place, then Liverpool will be set to be upgraded to automatic group stage qualification

:;): hey hey! what a result that would be! mind you, they'll wait til the last minute to tell us, after the lads have sweated cobs getting fit for a qualifier...fingers crossed then!

echo ..

It would be a great result and give us a chance to try and really have a good start to the premiership which we failed to do last year. See ing as Man Utd have the hardest opeing 5 games we could look to build a gap over them early.

I know they will give it to other Italian clubs...not sure how that would effect our Champions league placing tho.

Its a bit of a strange one isnt it, because it will surely affect the ranking of the teams in the tournament, so the draw will not be able to be made until the case is finished.
If there is an appeal the competition could be in chaos.

its certainly going to be interesting to see the outcome relating to this competition.

again, not totally related, but can anyone see the folly/irony  in both greece and italy (should they progress) both being held accountable to what basically amounts to 'fiddling' should they both be the holders of the 2 most prestigious tournaments.. ie the european champions AND potential world cup winners at the same time both facing disciplinary action for their administrative/personnel errors.

imagine, both holders turfed out of the playground for corruption  ???

More double standards from the imbaceles at FIFA.

The Italians get away with throwing flares at people's heads, and numerous countries get sh#te fines for racism towards players, yet with this Greece get banned.

and EFC would still find it within their remit to blame absolutely everything on liverpool....mind you, even everton would escape such scandal if it were ever to happen on blighty's doormat.

lets face it youve got to be in it to win it! and they are about as far off winning anything as luciano moggi is from having a decent nights kip!

We would possibly go top of the rankings if they are found guilty I imagine  :buttrock

They have started already bitter kunts.

a eufa spokesman was quoted as saying "we must do all we can for this merseyside club, not only will they not have to go through qualifying for the group stages,we have decided that liverpool will be given a bye all the way to the final. We at uefa are still disgusted with the referee of their game last year at analfield, that he allowed Benficas two goals to stand, and his refusal to give liverpool any penalties when they got within 10yards of the penalty box."
"We feel this is only right that a club of this size should not have to qualify or play any games in the CL,just incase any of their players get injured. Also the referee of the final will be instructed to play as much injury time as is needed to ensure that liverpool reclaim their rightful trophy"
"This is only fair as liverpool had to suffer a ban in the mid-eighties from all competitions in europe, and as everyone knows it wasn't their fault or their fans fault that they committed murder. As the police inspecter MR Hercule Poirot said at the time,"obviously this carnage was caused by people who where pretending to be liverpool supporters"

this has to be resolved quickly as the draw for the 3rd qualifying round takes place on 28th july. with the greek authorities having until the 15th of this month, ie 10 days, to respond.

more on this from uefa.com..

http://www.uefa.com/uefa/Keytopics/kind=64/newsId=433810.html

it couldnt really get any more desperate for the greeks could it?  what with the final also being in athens on 23/05/07.

we'll see. though ive a feeling we'll have to play the damn qualifier first...

It would be a huge bonus after last season to get a relatively normal fixture list, but it will almost certainly be contested right up until the time the qualifiers come around.
