Barragan sold - To deportivo

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby 7_Kewell » Fri Jul 07, 2006 12:21 pm

Deportivo La Coruna have completed the signing of Antonio Barragan from Liverpool.

The defender has penned a five-year contract with Depor, although Liverpool will have the option to buy him back in 2008.

The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of €2.5 million (£1.7 million).

The 19-year-old Spaniard was also a target for Real Betis but plumped for the Estadio Riazor largely because of coach Joaquin Caparros, who he worked with at Sevilla a couple of years ago.

Depor president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro was thrilled to snap up such a promising young player.

"This is a great signing for the future of Depor," he commented
“You cannot transfer the heart and soul of Liverpool Football Club, although I am sure there are many clubs who would like to buy it.”

Strange one this.  I can only assume the lad wasn't happy here, perhaps moving to a new country at his age was too much for him.

Benitez clearly rates him or he wouldn't have insisted on the buy-back clause.  Can someone clear up what a buy-back clause actually is?  I assume that it means if we bid a certain amount, Betis have to accept the bid and let us talk to the player.  But surely the player can turn round and tell us to feck off if he doesn't want to move, and he's not that likely to want to come back if he is so keen to go back to Spain already.  If he was set on coming back then surely a loan deal would have been agreed instead ???

the lad was home sick and didn't want to stay.  Apparently we can buy him back next summer, but i don't think he'll be back.

It means you can buy the player back at the price you sold him or you get 1st refusal at the market/demand price.

Shame really as I was hoping he would be able to step up to the first team this season.

He has been loaned to them for two seasons is what it means.

So Barragan basically doesn't have an option and has to come back here if we decide to exercise the clause?  Or could he still turn us down even if his club have to accept the buy-back fee (which makes it slightly different to a loan)?

Umm. No.

He's a Depor player now. A buy back clause doesn't guaranteee you anything, other than having an option. It's up to the player. Think that person was joking around..

He seemed to be one out brightest prospects and he was option to be back up right backup to Finnan if Kromkamp was sold. It seems he was home sick, 19 years old, just didn’t settle, fair enough, good luck to him, and one day we may see him back in a Liverpool shirt.

The press here sees Liverpool as the future club of Barragan, it would be some sort of long loan, or a transfer with a low buy-back price.

If there was a club good for the evolution of Barragan, that was Real Sociedad, or Deportivo. As for RS, you saw Mark Gonzalez.

As for Deportivo, good news is that they have a good coach, Caparros, who knows very well Barragan. Caparros was in Sevilla and he was there when Liverpool bought Barragan to Sevilla.

I'm happy because Barragan will probably enjoy an IMPORTANT amount of minutes.
