They aren't comparable.

Aquilani is an attacking midfielder. Adam is a holding midlfielder. In fact Adam is far more of a viable replacement for Alonso than Aquilani ever was.

But Adam isn't that good at his defensive side of the game. Whenever I see him track back he does a :censored: job of it. Aquilani isn't just a attacking midfielder, in Juventus he's done quite a lot of tackling as well. He's been very good at linking up the defence with attack.

I didn't say defensive midfielder, I said holding. Alonso wasn't that good at tackling, hence why we had Mascherano. Alonso was the link between attack and defence.

In my opinion Adam fits that role and offers the best solution we have to finally replace Alonso. Aquilani is an injury nightmare in Italy, he wouldn't last 10 full games over here. Pointless bringing him back.

Alonso is a GREAT defensive midfielder though, Adams isn't.  Alonso's greatest strength was his positioning it was almost always flawless so his lack of pace never really seemed to ever be a problem for him defensively.  I'm not convinced by Adams at all, he seems to be hit or miss too much from what I have seen from him.

Yeah, Adam and Aqua are different kind of players and I think that that's exactly why we dont need Aquilani, when we have Gerrard, Meireles, Shelvey, Cole... we only have Lucas, Poulsen and Spearing who play as holding midfielders with Lucas being the best player we have there. Lucas is good but not good enough and IMO I think that we need a holding midfielder (like Adam) more than we need an attacking one (Aquilani).

I don't think he is an injury nightmare in Italy mate, he only missed 2 games in the Seria A this season and completed most of the games the full 90 minutes. He does look sharper and fitter than before, but very inconsistent with his passing.

From Soccernet:

Juventus have opened negotiations with Liverpool regarding the permanent transfer of Alberto Aquilani, according to reports in Italy.

Aquilani is on loan at Juventus until the end of the season, but the Turin giants have an option to buy him for €16.5 million in the summer should they wish to do.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are unwilling to pay such a high amount and are hoping to agree a deal for around €12 million.

The Italian club are in a strong bargaining position because the player wants to stay in Turin and appears to be surpless to requirements at Anfield.

"It is thanks to the Bianconeri club that I have returned to the national team," Aquilani told Corriere dello Sport earlier this week. "The club has to evaluate the situation but I would like to stay."

Aquilani's desire to remain at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino should help smooth over issues with his salary. The 26-year-old currently earns €3.5 million a year and Juventus would like him to take a pay cut.

The former Roma player joined Liverpool in the summer of 2009 for a reported £20 million, but failed to make an appearance for the club until November due to injury.

He returned to Italy after just one year in the Premier League and has scored twice and made 27 league appearances for the Juventus this season.

Juve are seventh in Serie A, eight points behind Udinese, who hold the last Champions League qualifying spot with seven games remaining.

Pay up or we'll happily have him back thank you very much.
"Life is not just about money. There are other things, important things that have a different kind of value. Anyone from Liverpool could tell you that."

Another player that divides opinions .So for all the football purists who like to see a player with an exquisite touch ,here's a  little montage of his excellent display for Italy v Slovenia from the recent spate of Internationals .... Incidentally the Italian media seem to think he has cemented his place in the Italian midfield with this performance . So on the strength of that , I cant help thinking it wouldn't be so bad including Aquilani in our new set up next season

I've always thought he was a good player who needed a push to be great ,and like you say Ben I definitely wouldn't sell a full Italian International for the paltry price Juventus are offering

Personally I'd rather keep a fit Aquilani than sign Carlie Adam BUT I wouldn't want to hold onto a player who doesn't want to be here.

If Kenny wants to hold onto him he's gonna have to sit down with Aquilani and make sure the player is up for it.

I don't know Aquilani's state of mind but I'd put money on the fact that the fella would much rather stay in his native Italy than return to Liverpool.

I think Kenny could do it Woof, players just love the man ,but Juventus need to dig deep if they want him ,especially  now he's an established International .

Exactly woof. He's already said he wants to play for Juve, and let's face it, there's just not many players at this club he can bond with. We don't have any Italian players anymore if I'm not mistaken.  Aqua has done well in the Serie A, but I don't think he will hold up in the prem.  He's to fragile.

Adam is consistent for Blackpool. They were doing great while he was playing, then he got sick and had a couple match ban basically in succession and it was when they lost almost all of their games.  Adam can shoot, he can pass and he can sure as hell cross.  He has great deliveries and that's what we need.  He may not be the best defensive player, but that's not necessarily his job.

I hear you RB, but tbh I'd be happy if we just got our money back.

Maybe the exodus of the Spanish contingent over the last couple of seasons has soured my view of "foreign" commitment to LFC and I've never seen Italian players as ones to stick with a club outside of their own country.

If we hung onto Aquilani the fella (imo) would just let his contract run down and eventually skip off on a free.
