bigmick: "Ok it's a quiet day so I'm going to start the ball rolling on Dirk. I was actually tempted to do this straight after the West Ham game but resisted the temptation as I thought rating somebody after half an hour may destroy any credibility I have on here. That said bugger credibility, here goes.

I really like the guy. His movement and awareness are first rate and his appreciation of the game picture is sharply in focus. I like the way he passes it, with the way he attempts to get the pace right so the bloke recieving it has no work to do (his subtle little lay-off for the Bellamy disallowed goal wasn't given the credit it deserved). I like the way he heads it, arms up and attacking the space he calculates the ball will pass in it's tradjectory. I like the way he moves to recieve the ball, often taking a couple of steps backwards to give himself a bit of space. In his movement he reminded me very much of a young Teddy Sheringham or Dennis Bergkamp, who coincidentally he is more alike than he is to Van Nistelroy."

:D

I'm a fan of Dirk and would never slate him as much as some on here would... but come on...

 When I said "young" Teddy Sheringham I actually meant one about 12 years old :D

That's the thing though when you rate someone at first look. Some you get right, some you don't. You pays your money and you takes your chance.

I like to be fair with the context, because the early line clarifies that it's the first impressions after only 30 mins.

Probably the mood was quiet in football front that day and he decided to talk some footie. Kuyt probably did some work in that game, probably it was a good game, and when you're in that mood you're likely to give praise to a new signing. Myself in that thread was very optimist too!

So it's unfair to take things out of context, but when you stumble with this

Guess what, I like him. I think he'll be a massive success at Liverpool and all the clubs throughout Europe who looked at him and deliberated whether or not o go in for him will be kicking themselves over the next five years or so. I use the time period advisedly. I think he has the capability to become an Anfield legend.

I can't help to find it funny with all the stick the lad received from a lot of newkitters! :D

The"anfield legend" line was much quoted afterwards. The worst thing is I was right he is a legend, just not for what I was expecting him to be  .

"Kuyt really is something and once again the manager has proved that when he goes in really big for a player (by our standards) he gets it right. Kuyt was big money for us, but he's definately worth every single penny. I'd actually go as far as saying that in todays market if the 9 million pounds figure is to be believed, we have absolutely stolen him."

 That was back in the day. At least it disproves those who say I've always "hated Rafa with a passion", I actually thought he was doing an excellent job for the first couple of seasons.

No question about it though, I was wrong on Dirky boy, can't deny that one  :(

ALBERTO AQUILANI admits Liverpool’s poor form has made it even more difficult to find his feet at Anfield.

The Italian made his long-awaited full debut in Wednesday’s 2-1 home Champions League defeat against Fiorentina.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been reticent to push Aquilani into the first-team fray, with the midfielder continuing his rehabilitation from an ankle injury that required an operation before his £18million move from Roma in August.

It meant the 25-year-old had been restricted to just 22 minutes of action from the bench since making his debut in the Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal six weeks ago.

Explaining his use of Aquilani, Benitez had admitted Liverpool’s disappointing campaign – they have now won only three of their last 14 games – meant it was not the right time to introduce the player to the unique demands of English football. And the Italy international has said he didn’t anticipate a season of toil when penning a five-year deal in the summer.

“It is a difficult time for me to come into the team, because we are in a difficult place at the moment,” said Aquilani. “That makes it harder for any player to start with a new side. But I am here at Liverpool to make a difference, to help the team out of that difficult time.

“It’s not the season I was expecting when I signed for the club, that’s true. I was expecting to play in the Champions League, to find ourselves competing for trophies. But it is a long season, and the finish of it is a long way away. There is still time for that to change.

“I have seen plenty of reasons while I have been here to be positive about where the team is going, both tonight and in training.

“We have a lot of things to improve on, but we also have all the ability we need to get better. I am certain we will get better. With the players we have available to us, we can only get better.

“I don’t have any doubts about that at all.”

Aquilani had originally been expected to be absent for the first month of the season, but that diagnosis was revised when the full extent of the midfielder’s injury was realised.

Wednesday’s outing – the Italian was substituted after 76 minutes – was his first start since appearing for Roma against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final on March 11.

But Aquilani insists the fear of aggravating the problem is furthest from his mind, and said: “I feel good. I’m really happy to have come through my first game.

“My ankle is better, fully healed and there weren’t any problems after basically a year without playing it’s great to have played so many minutes, because it means I can have more faith that I’m fully fit again.

“There’s no fear at all that it might flare up again, I know it’s better, so I’m not worried at all about that. I just feel really happy to have played again. It’s really important for me to have played, because the more I play, the better I’ll get and the fitter I’ll be.”

Liverpool supporters were given a brief glimpse of what they hope will be a profitable future when Benitez fielded Aquilani, Steven Gerrard and the returning Fernando Torres for 11 minutes in the second half.

And Aquilani said: “It’s great to have finally got on to the pitch with players like Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

“That’s what I came here to do, to play with those sorts of players.

“The more we play together, the more they will have faith in me and the better our partnership will be.

“It was very hard to start for the first time in so long. While the result was not good, from a personal point of view it’s been good physically. I can play better but it was important to start and to run.

“I need to play, play, play because I’m in a new team.

“The first half I was okay and then after that a little bit tired, but that’s normal.

“Now I need to work hard in training for my body. I hope I can play against Arsenal.”

bigmick wrote:It's fair as well to note that while the Lucas early call (and indeed the Kuyt one) now looks at best questionable, I've got the odd one right in my time as well. Aurelio fans weren't thick on the ground when he first played, I was alone on the "ball watch" lookout for Skrtel way back when, I was fairly unequivical that Moreintes wouldn't make it early in the piece and explained why, ditto Cisse and I wasn't a million miles out on Johnson. I only needed to see Dossena play for about half an hour to be fairly sure which way that was going to go, so it's not all bad.

Just to reiterate with aquilani, I think he's a good player. I think he'll do OK for us if we can find a role for him, but he ain't an 18-20 million quid midifelder I don't think.

Chrimbo present in the post for you, mate. :D

aqua is going to take time to settle, very quiet when he came on, and for those that thought he would just come in and lead us to the holy grail straight away is just nuts.
