Everton have conceded that Liverpool should be invited to participate in next season's UEFA Champions League, if they win this year's competition.
The two Merseyside rivals are battling for the fourth Premiership berth in next
term's Champions League following FA confirmation that league placing will determine the entrants.
The FA had been placed in the position of having to decide who would claim the fourth Premiership spot in next season's Champions League due to Liverpool's run to the final in this campaign.
No country is allowed more than four representatives in the Champions League and there is also no provision for the winners of the competition to be allowed to defend their title.
As it stands, Liverpool could beat Milan in the final in Istanbul later this month only to be denied the chance to defend their crown.
Everton currently occupy fourth spot in The Premiership and hold a three-point cushion over The Reds and also have a game in hand.
The Toffees are thankful The FA have cleared up the issue over who will join Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in next season's Champions League.
But, while they are taking nothing for granted, Everton chief executive Keith Wyness revealed the club would wish to see Liverpool in the tournament as holders next term, if they see off Milan.
"Whilst we welcome the announcement from The FA regarding clarification on the fourth place qualification issue, we are still operating in a hypothetical situation with regards to Everton's position," Wyness told the club's official website.
"Despite what is a most intense local rivalry, we do believe that if Liverpool FC were to win this year's tournament they should be invited to return as holders.
"There are still crucial games left to play and we are fully aware that we have not yet claimed that important qualifying position."
