Car spare parts - Mad as hell

Hi guys,

Last Friday night some ar.sehole damaged my car when I was tucked up in bed asleep.

It was parked by the kerb outside my house when some spastic reversed into it, damaging the front passenger door.

There is a big dent in it and some scratching to the paint work.

I brought it to a mechanic type guy tonight who said that the problem couldn't be fixed by a panel beater, but that the door itself was buckled and really, I needed to get a new door. I trust this guy, he knows what he is talking about.

My car is only 10 months old: I bought it brand new last March.

The person who reversed into my car drove off: I didn't see it happening but I have an idea who it was. My neighbour had friends over that night and they had parked their cars opposite mine: it had to have been one of them. Unfortunately, they deny they know anything about it. I know it was one of them but cannot prove anything.

Now I'm left facing the bill to get this thing fixed. I won't claim off my insurance as I will lose my no claims bonus, meaning that if I claim, the insurance company will actually make a PROFIT on my claim over the next couple of years.  :no

Anyway, no point in crying over spilled milk, I have to try and sort the problem now.

Anybody with an interest in cars (Paul C etc) know how much a new or decent second hand car door would cost?

The second worst thing about this is that because I'll probably have to fork out between €800-€1000 in total, there will be no trips to Liverpool between now and the end of the season, which is a pity, as I was hoping to get over in February/March and also possibly for a European game.  :veryangry

Out of interest, what kind of car is it?

As for the damage, it sound's a bit extreme, the car surely couldn't have been going that fast when reversing in the street! A buckled door and a dent that can't be fixed just doesn't seem right to me, are you planning on letting this guy do the work?

I would suggest ( assuming the mechanic is right ) going to a scrap yard and getting second hand replacement part's and have them resprayed to match your car's colour, or you could be lucky and get a matching colour, if you do, a good clean and wax should bring it up new.

Its a Renault Megane Sport hatchback.

While at first I thought that a simple panel beating would sort it out, he pointed out that the whole door frame had bent slightly, meaning that it doesn't "join" perfectly. Stuff like that can be picked up by a garage if you try to trade the car in and can shave a grand off the resale price as they'll know that its been in a smash.

His quote for the labour is not actually bad. In my own trade I have seen many quotes for labour on car repairs for various issues and his quote is actually quite good. I can source the new door myself if needs be, so its not as if he will make a profit on the part.

I trust the guy and have dealt with him a lot before, I don't think he's bullshittin me.

The dent is quite bad: my electric window won't work properly as a result. If my suspicions are correct it was caused by a girl in a Nissan Micra (yes, woman drivers and all) with the L plates and such. I'm almost certain she was parked opposite my car that night. I have seen her try to reverse out of the spot and a few times and she is very heavy on the accelerator. She must really have swung out of the spot quite aggresively.

She's a friend of my neighbour who was visiting and when I asked him about it, he denied knowing anything. I haven't seen her since, but if her car has some damage to the left hand side rear bumper area, I'll know its her.

Claiming off my own insurance isn't really an option unless it works out to be too expensive to pay from my own pocket.

I've heard stories of €500 (or £330) for a new door for an average sized car.

JBG - what about the the bodywork warrenty?  Would getting a secondhand door fitted, and not one fitted by the dealer, not invalidate your warrenty?

Renault parts are expensive.  I have a Renault Laguna, and some asshole hit the spoiler, it cost me over £300 to get fixed.

A scrappy should do you a door for no more than £150-£200 (dont know what that is in euros!) max IMO. I wouldnt be looking to pay anmore than that at all, you get a second engine for some cars for that price TBH.
As for brand new door, will be very expensive, especially from the dealer, wouldnt be surprised if they quoted you 500GBP BEFORE V.A.T!

Have a good look in Auto Trader and the like, towards the back and look for (obvioulsy!) a Renault stockist or specialist scrappy.

Just ad a look on ebay and there are a pair of megane coupe 2.0 16v doors available for £60. Dont know if they the ones, but ebay is another place to keep an eye out for spares.

Go half way down the page and you will see it (pic of blue door!).

hi AB, again your another one who doesnt know the full extent of the pms i recieved from this sick f.ck, so no i wont let it go, the guy was banned and should not be back on here and as tedious as it is for others i will carry on until he reveals his true self again.

dont be taken in by him, the guy is sick hes a young boy who tries to be something he isnt.

now if he sent me a pm and said sorry for all his sh.it, then i may consider letting it go, but the fact he doesnt even have the decency and skulks round the forum like he did nothing wrong shows what type of character he is.

to make it clear i am not the only one who wants rid of him and i have received plenty of pms saying i am doing the right thing. others dont want him either but wont be vocal as they know they will have people on their case who dont realise what an a.ss he is.

i hope that clears it up and i ont want to fall out with you, but his return as already caused so many problems on here

JBG - has it bent the chassis aswell? You need to know.
Don't pay more than £50 for a door in excellent condition from a scrapyard.

They'll be ripping you off if they want more.
Take it to a few bodyshops and see if they'll sort it.
Best thing to do is take it to the Renault dealer you bought it from and ask them for a quote. They won't charge you (unless you let them), and you'll know if you're being bullsh*tted.

Without seeing the extent of the damage, I can't really tell you any more. Sadly though, once a door frame is buckled it can be a f*cking death trap.

if you buy a scrappers door, then if it aint the same colour then the spray job alone will be expensive.

If its just the door thats dented etc, then it should be no problem for a panel beater. Its just that theres more money in changing the door for a garage than beating it. Plus its the easier option. Dont be swayed, go somewhere else and get it beaten out, then get a scratch/dent specialist to paint the scratches out. It will look good as new.

The reason why i know, was that the same thing happened to my dad, and the door was a complete mess, nonetheless, he shopped around and took it to a panel beater/sprayer and got the whole job done for £300 sterling.

Up to you though, if you dont mind scanning the yellow pages for quotes etc
