right i need the help of some of our bespectacled computer boffins...

i've got an old laptop which was f*cked basically. anyway i've got it running again by wiping it completely and re-installing the whole operating system (windows xp home). but what has happened is that my desktop is like a small pane in the middle of the screen surrounded by black nothing-ness

how do i get it to go full-screen properly, any ideas?  ???

Have you/windows XP set the resolution too high for the graphics card/integrated graphics? How old is old and what op system was on it before?

Or try using the expand feature in the BIOS

Sabre is probably your best bet Wooly.

What noise does it make when you turn it on? What colour is it? and most important, have you tried hitting it with a hammer?

the laptop is 3 and a little bit years old, running xp home service pack 1 as it always has done. i re-installed it from the original cd that came with the machine when i bought it

it's pretty basic spec - 192 Mb RAM with intel celeron 2.4GHz processor, but no idea about graphics capability etc

igor i like the hammer idea although come to think of it that's why the thing's fecked in the first place :D

Wont be anything I suggested Wooly its too new for that. You could try inserting the windows xp disk and trying a repair, but its more likely to be your laptop than the op sys.

How did you know? :D

Bit weird to be honest. I don't think SP2 will solve the problem. Just a couple of questions

a) When switching on, when you see the text with your computer's memory and all that, do you see the text occupying the whole screen?
b) While booting XP with the progress bar, the windows xp progress bar is seen correctly in whole screen and then fúcks up, or is it seen already?

I'll be right back.

All right it seems to be a feature that have some lcd screens. Apparently there are users that for some reason wanted that feature in lcds to watch all the screen at a glance -don't ask-

you should go to the control panel

Start button then Control Panel, then Screen options, Config (I'm translating my menu is in Spanish) and select another resolution.

There seem to be some hardware though that had a special feature that came with the software of the screen, meaning that windows XP won't solve the trouble. You should tell me the brand of the laptop exactly in order I find the software and manual.

Good news: It's not broken.

Try first messing a bit with the standard windows screen configuration -ask if you're lost- and if you don't succeed tell me the brand and model of the laptop.
