Just to be clear, its NOT pronounced: Mary Land. Its Mare (as in an adult female horse, or Hair with an M instead of H) Lynd (as in Lyndsey). Also acceptable would be to say Marilyn with a D on the end.
And its not a team, its a State, more specifically a State University in this case, the one that I graduated from in May. This was the national university competition in case that wasn't clear, and Sabre, I don't follow them too much, but I did watch the semi finals and read about the finals because they were doing well (they are always there or about). I only went to a handful of games while I was in school some were from my "pre-LFC" days when I didn't know what the Champions League was and some were after, but I never really liked American soccer fans, they suck, and would call someone like me an "anglophile" or a "eurosnob," and would make claims like "DC United could finish ahead of Newcastle United if they both played in the BPL"
But on a separate note, managing at the elite university level is one of the biggest challenges in football IMO. Normally, its tough enough at uni level to have a rolling team with players only lasting 4 years, but I saw an interview with the Maryland manager on tv and he was explaining how recruitment is a delicate balance between recruiting players who you know will only play 1 or 2 years before becoming professional, and recruiting players that aren't as good on purpose but you can see room for development and a potential future as role player in the team in 3 or 4 years time. So its an odd dynamic where the stars of the team are the highly talented (in relative terms) young faces, and the smaller roles are given to the players who actually have some experience and found a niche in the system that they have been understudying for a couple of seasons.
