Gerrard has made the list for World player of the year( naturally).Rooney and Lampard made it too :( .

Fifa World Player of the Year shortlist:
Adriano (Inter Milan, Brazil), Michael Ballack (Chelsea, Germany), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid, Italy), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal), Petr Cech (Chelsea, Czech Republic), Deco (Barcelona, Portugal), Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast), Michael Essien (Chelsea, Ghana), Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona, Cameroon), Luis Figo (Inter Milan, Portugal), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan, Italy), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England), Thierry Henry (Arsenal, France), Kaka (AC Milan, Brazil), Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen, Germany), Philippe Lahm (Bayern Munich, Germany), Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England), Jens Lehmann (Arsenal, Germany), Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan, Italy), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan, Italy), Franck Ribery (Marseille, France), Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Argentina), Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, England), Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal, Czech Republic), Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea, Ukraine), Lilian Thuram (Barcelona, France), Patrick Vieira (Inter Milan, France), Zinedine Zidane (retired, France).

my top 5 would be :-

1/ Canavaro - awesome at the world cup
2/ Henry - virtually carried Arsenal to last seasons CL Final
3/ Gerrard - poor WC ,but won FA cup and had a great season for Liverpool.
4/Ronaldinho - poor WC by his standards, but still won CL with Barca.
5/Juan Roman Riquelme - Great season for club and country

My vote goes to Cannavaro, quite possibly the best defender I have ever seen.

Riqeulme was also fantastic for his club.

the world cup is the pinnacle of world football and not a single english player showed any greatness. The premiership media machine is so powerful that people believe the hype and they dominate the list. domestic football is not enough to achieve the acclaim of best footballer in the world.

Adriano? I've seen his teammate Ronaldo move more than him!! Fat sod!

This should be called the biggest reputation of the year award.

I know Nesta was injured for much of the world cup but either he or Cannavora should win.

I agree Niall, for example where the fuk is Luca Toni? leading scorer in Serie A with 31 goals and had a pretty reasonable world cup.

Farcical!

cannavaro for being at the heart of the world cup winning team, i agree its the biggest stage and fabio stepped up to the plate in a big way.

Zizu gets the runner up prize simply for ending his career with confirmation of his legendry status. we're all gonna be talking about that final in 30 years time, and that means are kids are too.
