As a respectful reader of Asian history and a massive fan of Asian cinema I was horrified when I saw that Keanu "The Plank" Reeves would star in a Hollywood version of the legendary Japanese tale of the 47 Ronin.
Despite my misgivings out of curiosity I found and Dloaded a torrent for the movie . After less than 10 minutes I stopped watching and consigned it straight to the bin.
Hollywood is renowned for stealing stories from other nations and moulding them for their American audience (and of course profit) This however is the worst case on film I've ever seen of the rape and bastardisation of another country's revered cultural legend.
Reeves if he has any morals at all should be ashamed of himself.
Anyone who is remotely interested in the actual story should look out for one of two Japanese retelling of this legendary story, both available on DVD.
1, Chushingura, the trailers "hype" is a bit overblown but they are trying to promote a Japanese movie in the west in 1962. Great film starring the magnificent Toshiro Mifune.
2, Shijushichinin No Shikaku. Another excellent retelling of the legend. Released in 1994, perhaps the cinematic style is too slow for most westerners but for anyone interested in Samurai or the code of Bushido, well worth watching.
at least you had the sense to bin it after 10 mins you didnt miss a lot either and even the main fight scene was a real let down, the special effects where good but the rest was just poo. really poor effort altogether. 1/5 cheers for the trailers and will definately have a mooch for the second one

Amen.
I couldn't believe Ted was going to be in a film about the 47 Ronin. But what was even worse was what I saw in the trailer. Fuck me, what were they thinking?
The story of the Ronin is great without adding all the shite.
I was at their shrine when I was in Japan 10 years ago, which was pretty cool.
There are times when I really do want to burn Hollywood to the ground.
the monkey king (2014) have to say i enjoyed it i love all that monkey magic stuff and the effects and choreography where top class. the subs where a bit off but the fight scenes more than made up for it. probably not everyones cup of tea but if your into that kind of thing its worth a watch
