Wouldn't your first logical thought be, that:
a) Pepe was earning 100,000 a week - thus too expensive to sit on the bench at that cost?
b) Shay Given is brought in as a willing and able deputy at 'less' than half the cost?
c) Would Pepe really be willing to play second fiddle at Liverpool anyway - well, the answer there is no because he could have rejected Napoli
I don't see why you've jumped to that conclusion though.
It does seem an odd transfer considering we're in dyer need of other places, but I'd be more confident if we ever had to call upon Given rather than Jones - no disrespect to Jones either.
it is that we got shut of a keeper when we didnt need to and spent 9 million on a replacement. loan the original keeper out and then seek to aquire another as back up.
surely the best thing to do would have been keep reina, sign given as back up and then next year when bareclona come calling then sign mignolet. he would still have been at sunderland and if he wasnt then we could have went in for begovic. at least the money would have allowed us to sign something else.
the money spent on mingolet could have helped us get some of the targets we are now missing out on.
reina didnt have to sit on the bench, it was brendan who put him there.
if we really wanted given then bye bye brad if the finances is all we are worried about. as you said yourself he is much better.
reina wouldnt need to play second fiddle if we didnt jump the gun on mignolet and lets be real here, he wasnt given the chance to have the choice either. he was going whether he liked it or not and it wasnt down to anyone other than the manager.
if you want to think its because of his wage then belt away, mine is that the manager didnt rate him and wanted him gone so much that it was one of the first deals we did.
