FSG said themselves that significantly reducing the wage bill was one of their top priorities. they said it was unsustainable for the club to continue in the manner it was. those figures from 2011 were probably the high water mark.
Well, if we take the last 2 years as you suggest then I still can't see how we could have possibly reduced our wage spending given our transfers (in and out) during the period. From the players that one would assume would be paid 50k+,
we lost: Meireles, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Cole Aquilani, Maxi, and Kuyt.
we brought in: Enrique, Downing, Henderson, Coutinho, Sturridge, Allen, Borini.
We also offered big contracts to our 3 highest paid players under the current ownership recently so I suppose it is more about getting the wage balance right rather than reducing the wages.
Regardless, with Cole, Carra, and now Carroll (it seems) leaving the club, we should have enough room in our wage budget to pay for at least 2 100K+ players, or 5 40K players. Again, its in our hands, and you get what you pay for more often than not.
