Liverpool will rekindle their interest in Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain in January after failing to lure him to Anfield in the summer.

According to reports in Brazil, the Merseysiders saw the Italian club knock back an offer of £22m plus midfielder Lucas Leiva in exchange for Higuain during the summer months.

However, the initial rejection has not put off Brendan Rodgers who is set to go back in for the ex-Real Madrid star in January.

The striker has been linked with a move away from the Serie A club for a while with Arsenal also thought to be interested in his signature.

Spanish club Barcelona were also reported to be keen but his brother, who doubles up as his agent, recently revealed they have not been in touch. The striker has been linked with a move away from the Serie A club for a while with Arsenal also thought to be interested in his signature.

Spanish club Barcelona were also reported to be keen but his brother, who doubles up as his agent, recently revealed they have not been in touch. "We have had no contact with the Barcelona directors, nor the coach," Nicolas Higuain said.

"The links with Barcelona are like in a film, there is nothing real about it."

The French-born Argentinian international began his career at River Plate before moving to Real Madrid where he established himself as one of the world's most sought-after strikers.

Higuain was made available by the Spanish club despite his impressive goal ratio and he joined Rafael Benitez's Napoli side where he scored 17 league goals last season.

Liverpool are set to offer Marco Reus a contract worth £200,000-a-week in order to complete a move to Anfield in the January transfer window.

The Reds have made Reus their number one priority for the new year and are increasingly confident of doing a deal.

Borussia Dortmund have already started work on finding a replacement and reports now say Liverpool will make a giant contract offer imminently as they close on a deal.

Brendan Rodgers is willing to offer Reus a five-year contract worth £200,000-a-week - which would make him their highest paid player ever.

Reus, who currently earns about £60,000-a-week, is expected to jump at the move - meaning that all that remains is for a fee to be agreed with Dortmund.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will lure Borussia Dortmund's coveted star Marco Reus to Anfield by making him the club's highest paid player of all time.

Reports claim Liverpool are intent on signing the German international, and will stop at nothing to fend-off interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Liverpool chiefs have given the green-light for Rodgers to offer Reus a contract in excess of £200,000 per-week wages - a considerable increase on his current £60,000 a-week deal.

The likelihood of Reus leaving Borussia Dortmund is growing daily, and Rodgers will be boosted by the news that Jurgen Klopp is pursuing Paris Saint-Germain star Javier Pastore as his replacement.

Manchester City looked to be in pole-position for Reus' signature having made an official enquiry only last week, but City's optimism may be short-lived now Liverpool have declared interest.

The German superstar is contracted until 2017, but a £20m buy-out clause is set to kick in during the summer of 2015, enabling those with financial muscle to poach him from under the noses of Dortmund chiefs.

Despite still recovering from an ankle ligament injury, Reus clearly has the potential to help Liverpool continue their quest to cement a regular place in the top-four.

He has played 96 matches for Borussia Dortmund and scored 43 goals, with a further 40 assists to boot.

West Ham defender Winston Reid is confident of completing a move to Liverpool after rejecting other offers in favour of a switch to Anfield.

Reid, who has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the league, has been a long standing target for Arsenal.

But reports now say that the New Zealand international will snub the Gunners in order to join Liverpool instead.

He is said to have set his heart on a move to Anfield and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will now try and make the transfer happen.

Reid is unlikely to come cheap as he is a crucial part of the Hammers squad, but it's thought that they could sell for about £15million.

Bayern Munich outcast Xherdan Shaqiri claims he will reassess his future when the transfer window reopens in January.

Shaqiri attempted to push through a transfer during the summer window, with Premier League pair Manchester United and Liverpool credited an interest.

However, Bayern insisted the Switzerland winger - who made just 17 outings in the Bundesliga last term - was not for sale.

The 22-year-old is still struggling to cement a first-team place at the German champions, but admits his future lies in Bayern's hand.

Shaqiri, who is under contract until 2013, said: "I was looking for more first team action this season, everyone knows that.

"We had a sit down and discussed things with Bayern Munich. I received a clear message: I have to stay. I accepted that.

"We will have a look at things again in the winter. We will have to figure things out.

"I have a long-term deal at Bayern Munich so it is the club that will decide. If the club does not want to sell me or let me go, then that is positive news for me."

Liverpool are set to open talks with French club PSG over a deal to sign former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

The ex-Magpies man is on the fringes of life at PSG and admitted this week that he would consider returning to the Premier League in January.

And now reports say that Liverpool are prepared to take him, and are set to open negotiations with PSG over a deal.

Arsenal are also keen on the pass-master, but they're already well stocked with central midfielders, meaning Liverpool represents the best chance of game time.

PSG are thought to want about £20million for Cabaye and would be prepared to sell if somebody matched that asking price.

Sebastian Giovinco is open to the idea of a move away from Juventus in the summer.

The Italy forward has found his first-time opportunities at the Bianconeri hard to come by this term, starting just one Serie A match.

The 27-year-old's contract is set to expire at the end of the season, putting Premier League suitors Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham on red alert.

Giovinco is yet to open negotiations with the Italian giants over a contract extension, and admits he could leave next summer.

"There are things to evaluate and at the end of the year I will consider whether or not to continue with Juve," he said.

"The season has just started, we've only played eight games, so we'll see as time goes on."

His agent, Andrea D'Amico, added: "I do not understand how Marotta and Juventus could decide to lose a fantastic player like Giovinco for free."

That's according to reports in Brazil, which claim that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers made an official approach for the Argentina star before the close of the transfer window.

Brazilian newspaper Zero Hora claims that Rodgers offered former Reds boss Rafa Benitez £22m plus Lucas Leiva in an attempt to sign the 26-year-old.

They also claim that the rejected bid for Higuain prompted the Reds to make a move for Mario Balotelli, who they signed for £16m just days before the close of the transfer window.

Speculation around Higuain's future has intensified again after recent reports claimed that he is unhappy in Naples.

That speculation has prompted reports claiming that Liverpool will make another move for the former Real Madrid, who is always wanted by their Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Liverpool’s bid to sign Victor Valdes has collapsed, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers had asked the former Barcelona keeper, now a free agent, to prove his fitness by coming on a four-day visit to the Reds' Melwood training ground.

But Valdes, 32, who is recovering from a serious knee injury, rejected the request.

Rodgers wanted to make sure Valdes would be fit to challenge Simon Mignolet for the No.1 spot.

But the Spain international, who is trying to secure a deal after leaving Barcelona in the summer, was reluctant to go “on trial”.

Better news for Rodgers is that Liverpool are favourites to land Dele Alli from MK Dons.

The teenage midfielder, a Liverpool fan, has been watched by the Reds since breaking into Karl Robinson’s first team last season.

Although Everton and Tottenham have also been monitoring the 18-year-old – who has scored six goals so far this season – Liverpool are in pole position.

A fee in the region of £9million has been mooted and Rodgers will firm up that interest when the transfer window opens in January.
