The Reds are said to be leading the race for Germany international Reus, who has rejected a new contract at Dortmund and looks set to leave.

His release clause, which comes into effect next summer, was thought to be worth £27million, but Bild says interested clubs have now been alerted that it is actually as low as £19.8million.

That means that Liverpool could sign the 25-year-old for less than £20million, if they successfully fend off interest from other clubs.

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have both been linked with Reus, while Barcelona are also known to have a fleeting interest.

However, with all three already well stocked with midfielders and with Reus said to be looking for a big project at his next club, Liverpool will firmly be in the race.

Won't happen, sadly.

Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Bayer Leverkusen starlet Julian Brandt in action.

The 18-year-old is the latest attacking midfielder to roll off the German production line and he has swiftly progressed to the Bundesliga side's first-team after joining from Wolfsburg in December 2013.

Merseyside scouts saw him star in the European Under-19 championships in Hungary and they are set to monitor him further.

However, a move this summer is considered highly unlikely as he still has five years left on his Leverkusen contract.

Brandt helped his club to fourth in the Bundesliga last season scoring twice in 12 league games. The creative midfielder joined FC Oberneuland's youth ranks aged 13 before switching to VfL Wolfsburg two years later.

He is considered to be on the most promising young stars in the Bundesliga and has racked up plenty of international experience with the German national youth sides.

Chelsea were linked with a move for Brandt last season and his then coach Mike Schussler believed he could become a top player.

"He has a style of play that proves he can take the next step," he told Bild.

Liverpool have received a boost after Antonio Candreva's agent admitted the Italy star could leave Lazio before the close of the transfer window.

The Reds, along with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, are admirers of Candreva, who netted 12 Serie A goals for Lazio last season.

Lazio co-owned the 27-year-old with Udinese but acted swiftly earlier this summer to end the arrangement and now have the final say over his future.

However, the midfielder could be on his way from the Italian capital, with his representative Federico Pastorello admitting that all options are open before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.

He told Cittaceleste.it: "Until September 1st, anything can still happen."

Candreva was part of Italy's World Cup squad and provided the cross that teed up Mario Balotelli to head the winning goal during the Azzurri's 2-1 win against England in Manaus in June.

Barcelona have made no contact with Napoli for Gonzalo Higuain, according to his representative, leaving Arsenal and Liverpool favourites to land the striker.

Higuain was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal last summer before eventually switching from Real Madrid to Napoli for £32.5m.

The Argentina striker is still on the Gunners' radar after an impressive debut season in Serie A, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.

The Emirates outfit, who are in need of competition for Olivier Giroud, are this time joined by Liverpool after the club didn't sign Loic Remy.

Hoped you're wrong but...

When Borussia come for the friendly, they can leave Reus behind. We'll cut Mkhitaryan in half so hopefully they might not notice a player missing

So the release clause doesn't come in to affect until NEXT SUMMER. By which time he'll have signed a new contract and/or other clubs will all be sniffing around.  Tabloids love a story like this, but nothing will happen now as his price now is still exactly the same as it was a month ago

If true, absolutely pointless by both teams. We would never sell and doubt sterling would want to go there yet. If he ended up there at this stage in his career, the move to those teams would ruin him. Sterling won't be going anywhere for a very long time

Nah, owners know how to play this. With Sterling's potential, he could break the transfer record in a few years time. Right now, we won't get more than 30 million. Not that I would ever want us to sell him if he keeps going like this, just saying why we won't sell him right now.

Howard Webb has been appointed technical director of the official referees' association, bringing to an end a 25-year refereeing career.

Webb has refereed over 500 Premier League and Football League matches and officiated in the 2010 World Cup final.

He began his career in 1989, progressing through the Northern Counties and Football League to become a Select Group referee in 2003.

"I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career," said Webb.

Oh happy day  :buttrock

Liverpool are reportedly confident of signing Radamel Falcao this summer after opening talks with Monaco over a deal.

Falcao has been widely tipped to depart Monaco during this transfer window as the French club look to balance out their spending - and Real Madrid and Manchester City have both been linked with moves.

However, Liverpool now appear to have entered the race for the striker as they look to sign a world class replacement for Luis Suarez following his exit to Barcelona.

Italian journalist Mina Rzouki says the Reds have already held positive negotiations over Falcao and are now hopeful of being able to lure him to Anfield.

It's thought that the 28-year-old is available on-loan with a view to a permanent deal which would suit Liverpool, having already spent big this summer.
