#LFC would ideally like to take Papa on loan initially with a guaranteed fee of around £12m to be paid if he erases all injury doubts Mirror

Are we going to try and take every player on loan first !! Schalke aren't going to let one of their best players go on loan for a year as a trial run ! They will want cash - is the person doing our transfers a total clown - yes I forgot its Ayre. Who shall we ask next to borrow for a year

You're right Kenny, but I think buying Papadopouls is worth the risk. There's no way Schalke will settle for a loan.

he had his operation last year and if we were so worried about it then why are we even looking at him  :upside:
there is only one club out there that loans out their top players and its us, i really hope that loan thing is rubbish and we make a bid before we lose out on another player.

A bit of a giggle for a wed morning

Liverpool close on Torres as Suarez nears exit
July 31, 2013 12:10 AM

The Daily Star

Liverpool have stepped up their attempts to bring former Kop idol Fernando Torres back to Merseyside, after meeting with the player’s agent in London, according to numerous British tabloids. Torres, who departed the Reds for Stamford Bridge for a British record of 50 million pounds ($76 million), has endured a disappointing time in the capital and netted only 35 times in 131 appearances for the Blues.

Liverpool have privately accepted that unsettled striker Luis Suarez may have played his final game for the club, and American owners Fenway Sports Group have now instructed managing director Ian Ayre to garner the highest possible transfer fee for their prized asset.

Premier League rivals Arsenal have already had two bids rejected for the Uruguayan – their latest being 40 million pounds – but it is understood that a third offer in excess of 50 million pounds will be enough to prize Suarez away from the 19-time league champions.

As soon as a deal for Suarez is finalized, Liverpool will make their move for Torres following successful talks with his agent Antonio Sanz in the capital Saturday, where personal terms were agreed over a 150,000-pounds-per-week, five-year deal.

The Spanish striker was recently informed by new Blues manager Jose Mourinho that he would only be utilized as a fringe player for the upcoming season, with the Portuguese actively pursuing the services of United forward Wayne Rooney to partner Romalu Lukaku in attack.

The two clubs have reportedly already agreed on a fee of 20 million pounds for the player in question, who moved to Stamford Bridge in January 2011.

It was thought that Torres would reject the advances of Liverpool in order to fight for his place in the Chelsea lineup, but after careful deliberation the 29-year-old has been swayed regarding a move back to the northeast.

After talks with close friends, family members and advisers, Torres has come to the conclusion that it would be in his best interests to rejoin Liverpool, especially during a season which ends with the World Cup finals in Brazil.

Meanwhile, Mourinho has refused to rule out a move to bring back Chelsea legend Didier Drogba to the club, who is currently on the books at Turkish side Galatasaray. Drogba spent eight highly successful seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League in his final year with Chelsea.

Mourinho has been on the lookout for a world class striker, with Rooney his top target. But should he fail to land the 27-year-old Englishman, he will reportedly turn his attentions to Drogba, whom he signed from Marseille for 24 million pounds back in 2004.

“He is a player and he is a winner and he enjoys his game and I almost had a heart attack because of him,” Mourinho told the Telegraph.

“Let him enjoy a good couple of years of football, but after that, he is loved in this club by everyone and that’s very, very normal. I think one day he will have a Chelsea future.”

If it is serious ( and I doubt it ) i wouldn't know what to think as there is still a very sour taste after the way he left. As soon as he left he just looked a shell of his former self - would his form return with us ? That's an expensive risk

The Benfica fans on Twitter don't seem to rate him much as a left back - same with journos

Liverpool target Lorenzo Melgarejo: An in-depth look at the Benfica man wanted by the Kop

“Why did they let him go?” is one of the first questions any fan wondering about a new acquisition should ask when a young prospect is released.

In the case of 22 year-old Paraguayan Lorenzo Melgarejo, the apparently simple answer of “he didn’t do the business for Benfica last season”, is just one, very small, part of the story.

First thing's first. Liverpool target Melgarejo is an exciting, talented, free-scoring left winger .

Or rather, he was.

His position is purposely written in italics, because if you read any review on Benfica in 2012/13, Melgarejo will be correctly listed as a left-back.

However, it was on the wing where he made his name. He was bought by Benfica from Independiente in 2011 and immediately loaned out to modest Portuguese top-flight club, Paços de Ferreira. This is common practice in Portugal, with FC Porto and Benfica especially contracting a bucket-load of South Americans each summer, a significant proportion of whom fit into the “let’s have a punt on him” category. Most disappear without trace.

Not Melgarejo. A string of vibrant displays on the left flank (see video) saw him finish top scorer for Paços in 2011/12 (10 goals in 29 league games), almost single-handedly saving the club from relegation. It was enough to persuade Benfica to bring him into the senior squad on an improved and extended contract until 2018, with a €30 million release clause written into it.

However, Melgarejo was never given the chance to build on his brilliant season in his natural position. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus’ all-out attacking philosophy makes his teams a joy to watch, but the tactician comes with a hefty dose of arrogance, some would say delusion, others downright stubbornness.

Jesus insisted from the outset that Melgarejo would be Benfica’s first-choice left-back, undoubtedly influenced by the spectacular success in bringing about the exact same conversion in the case of Fábio Coentrão. Coentrão arrived at Benfica a talented winger. He left in exchange for €30 million euros from Real Madrid having established himself as one of the world’s finest in his position.

It soon became clear to most onlookers that history would not repeat itself. A series of blunders during preseason cost several goals but Jesus insisted in proving the critics wrong. Not even after the first Liga game of the season, when Melgarejo scored a spectacular own goal and laid on a perfect ‘assist’ for the opposition, in a 2-2 draw against Braga, would Jesus be dissuaded from abandoning his experiment.

And so the whole season the position remained Benfica’s weak spot, with opposition teams evidently targeting Melgarejo. He improved, but his lack of aggression and positional difficulties made it clear, especially against stronger adversaries, that he did not have the attributes to perform the role asked of him to any degree of success. By the end of the campaign the penny finally dropped and Jorge Jesus dropped Melgarejo for the Portuguese Cup final.

The skill, speed and directness of the Paraguayan’s forward runs in 2012/13, allied to a commendable incisiveness (scoring in successive home games in March) shows he remains an exciting prospect with a big future in the game. But not at left-back.

The art of negotiations Benny, you come in low as they come in high and then meet in the middle somewhere. I doubt Ayre is a clown as I have never seen him with a big, round red nose or squeezing a honker everytime he tells a joke. Just saying! Besides, just because you read it it does not make it true.
