The top English clubs chasing a new forward seem set to look abroad before scouring the English market, and the name touted for more than two years, Fernando Torres, is one of the more eligible players.
The 23-year-old has a 40m euros buy-out clause, but a lesser sum will probably succeed should Atlético Madrid fail to qualify for the Uefa Cup and once again miss out on European competition. Earlier in the season, Atlético were amongst the top four and threatened to make the Champions League, but a terrible slump, culminating with a 2-3 home defeat against relegation-bound Celta Vigo last Saturday, has left the popular club in seventh position – two points behind Villarreal and Real Zaragoza, who occupy the two Uefa Cup spots.
Torres has admitted a departure is almost guaranteed should his beloved club not play in Europe. Manchester United were close to signing the Spaniard 12 months ago, but following a successful World Cup, Atlético suddenly raised their asking price and ultimately no deal was brokered, despite Sir Alex Ferguson's eagerness to replace the outgoing Ruud van Nistelrooy. Torres is no longer the sole target though. Names such as Eidur Gudjohnsen, Carlos Tévez and Javier Saviola have been touted, and all would cost less than the Atlético skipper.
Liverpool are the only other English club interested as they continue in their very public search for a prolific striker, with Benítez confident he could attract Torres, but the £23m price tag could prove a stumbling block. Benítez doesn't seem to know how much money he will have to spend in spite of the pledges of new owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to back him unreservedly. The manager's future has been called into question in recent days over the delay in his bid to rebuild the Liverpool squad, and no immediate resolution is in sight.
Atlético's bargaining position will depend on the results of La Liga's final round of matches. Javier Aguirre's men have to win at Osasuna – who won 5-0 at Real Betis last weekend – to stand a chance of finishing inside the top six. They have won eight of 18 away matches – the second most in La Liga, only behind Real Madrid – but are also relying on Zaragoza and/or Villarreal to slip up. The former are at high-flyers Recreativo Huelva while the latter travel to Sevilla, who can still win the league if both Real Madrid and Barcelona slip-up. However, Recreativo have nothing to play for while Sevilla are plagued by injuries and have a Copa del Rey final next weekend against Getafe to prepare for.
It appears neither Manchester United nor Liverpool wish to activate Torres's release clause of just over £27m, as may be necessary if the club qualify for the Uefa Cup, but a bid of between £20m and £23m would be accepted if Atlético miss out, a sum that would certainly tempt Sir Alex to revive his interest and surely be within Liverpool's reach.
Torres has scored 15 times this season, including four from the penalty spot, and his overall record reads as 82 goals in 212 matches for Atlético – or a goal every 233 minutes.
