The top English clubs chasing a new forward seem set to look abroad before scouring the English market, and the name touted for more than two years, Fernando Torres, is one of the more eligible players.

The 23-year-old has a 40m euros buy-out clause, but a lesser sum will probably succeed should Atlético Madrid fail to qualify for the Uefa Cup and once again miss out on European competition. Earlier in the season, Atlético were amongst the top four and threatened to make the Champions League, but a terrible slump, culminating with a 2-3 home defeat against relegation-bound Celta Vigo last Saturday, has left the popular club in seventh position – two points behind Villarreal and Real Zaragoza, who occupy the two Uefa Cup spots.

Torres has admitted a departure is almost guaranteed should his beloved club not play in Europe. Manchester United were close to signing the Spaniard 12 months ago, but following a successful World Cup, Atlético suddenly raised their asking price and ultimately no deal was brokered, despite Sir Alex Ferguson's eagerness to replace the outgoing Ruud van Nistelrooy. Torres is no longer the sole target though. Names such as Eidur Gudjohnsen, Carlos Tévez and Javier Saviola have been touted, and all would cost less than the Atlético skipper.

Liverpool are the only other English club interested as they continue in their very public search for a prolific striker, with Benítez confident he could attract Torres, but the £23m price tag could prove a stumbling block. Benítez doesn't seem to know how much money he will have to spend in spite of the pledges of new owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to back him unreservedly. The manager's future has been called into question in recent days over the delay in his bid to rebuild the Liverpool squad, and no immediate resolution is in sight.

Atlético's bargaining position will depend on the results of La Liga's final round of matches. Javier Aguirre's men have to win at Osasuna – who won 5-0 at Real Betis last weekend – to stand a chance of finishing inside the top six. They have won eight of 18 away matches – the second most in La Liga, only behind Real Madrid – but are also relying on Zaragoza and/or Villarreal to slip up. The former are at high-flyers Recreativo Huelva while the latter travel to Sevilla, who can still win the league if both Real Madrid and Barcelona slip-up. However, Recreativo have nothing to play for while Sevilla are plagued by injuries and have a Copa del Rey final next weekend against Getafe to prepare for.

It appears neither Manchester United nor Liverpool wish to activate Torres's release clause of just over £27m, as may be necessary if the club qualify for the Uefa Cup, but a bid of between £20m and £23m would be accepted if Atlético miss out, a sum that would certainly tempt Sir Alex to revive his interest and surely be within Liverpool's reach.

Torres has scored 15 times this season, including four from the penalty spot, and his overall record reads as 82 goals in 212 matches for Atlético – or a goal every 233 minutes.

France football also claimed that Henry had agreed to join Barca on a three year deal - to which Henry's agent initiated legal action.

looks a bit special for a 19 year old. very similar in style to kaka

gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal !

awesome isnt he...

had quite a few misses but his goals were fab.

i dont think rafa would sign him but if i was manager i would... he loves to run at defenders and he loves to run onto long midfield passes would really cause problems for opposition defenders...

Liverpool are waiting for West Ham United to make a concrete bid for striker Craig Bellamy.
The Hammers are expected to turn to the Welshman after being snubbed by Charlton Athletic's Darren Bent last week.

The Liverpool Daily Post says Liverpool will allow Bellamy to leave if they can get a satisfactory profit on the £6million they paid Blackburn Rovers for him a year ago.

West Ham are believed to be preparing a £9million bid, but this could rise if they decide to include Yossi Benayoun ? who has handed in a transfer request in the wake of an approach from Liverpool ? as part of an exchange deal.

admist all the constant talk of Thierry Henry's future, one piece of news has slipped largely unnoticed: Franck Ribery's move to Bayern Munich. Ribery, the skilful but resilient midfielder who was so impressive in Germany last summer, was, potentially, a major source of midfield goals for Arsenal. Yet the London club were unwilling or unable to match Munich's £17million bid. Their search for midfield goals continues.

Last season, Gilberto, with six goals from open play, was Arsenal's top scorer from midfield. It was a stark contrast to previous seasons, when Freddy Ljungberg and Robert Pires invariably contributed double figures; Pires' strike-rate in some campaigns was near to a goal every other game. Pires was not offered the contract he desired last summer; though in decline, he still managed 9 goals from midfield in '05/06. Ljungberg is only 30 and should be playing the best football of his career, but has lost pace and the knack of scoring crucial goals, and will be on his way from The Emirates this summer.

With Cesc Fabregas' sterling progress not yet including scoring regularly - he managed a paltry four last season - the onus is on the new generation of wide men to fill the void left by Ljungberg and Pires. Yet Alexander Hleb is unconvincing in front of goal; Tomas Rosicky, though capable of spectacular strokes, rarely scores the types of strikes so typical of Ljungberg and Pires in their pomp; and Theo Walcott is yet to turn potential into consistent performance.

Ultimately, perhaps the biggest reason for Arsenal's decline of the past two seasons is simply the absence of goals from the wide players. They have lost around 30 goals a season and, with Arsenal's game reliant on forward support for the strikers, they have become much less penetrating. The incisive diagonal runs of Ljungberg and Pires, often fed by Dennis Bergkamp, were utterly invaluable facets of Arsenal's spell of success, beginning with the exhilarating '01/02 campaign. The duo possessed a forward's knack in front of goal; they were adroit at linking up with the strikers; and defences, so fearful of the players gliding in so score, were forced to devote the forwards more space.

Until this situation is resolved, it is hard to see how Arsenal's fortunes can be significantly removed - unless Arsene Wenger is prepared to make a significant tactical change. The season-long presence of either Thierry Henry or Samuel Eto'o, along with Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor, does offer the tantalising prospect of Arsene Wenger altering his side's style of play to a 4-3-3.

This formation would bare resemblance to the 4-1-4-1 formation utilised to great effect at Old Trafford and the Madjeski stadium before being hastily disbanded, and would certainly be an intriguing possibility. Adebayor would be ideally suited to being the central forward, while the rapidly improving van Persie, who contributed 13 goals in 17 starts last season, would relish playing in the right forward's role, which he has been terrific for Holland in.

The position on the left would be occupied by either Henry or his replacement, with the vivacious, powerful Eto'o being the outstanding candidate. Eto'o is as close as you will find to a younger version of Henry and Arsenal must be prepared to pay big to sign him - even if they lose their skipper in the process.

Even if Wenger does opt for such tactical boldness, then it is undeniable they will require a more steady stream of goals from midfield. Rosicky will surely manage more than his four of his first season next campaign, while Fabregas should chip in with more regularity. Nonetheless a genuine goalscoring midfielder is essential if Arsenal are to progress.

At £3million, Yossi Benayoun could do a good job, but Blackburn's creative Norwegian midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen may be the man for Arsenal. Though currently too inconsistent, he is still reasonably young - 25 - and has illustrated his flair and panache on many occasions, as when he struck both goals in Blackburn's win at Manchester United. Equally, he is also a big threat in the air - something Arsenal palpably need - and would surely be very interested in a move. However, Wenger must move soon - for LIVERPOOL are also believed to be interested.

Mesto agent reveals Liverpool interest

The agent of Giandomenico Mesto has revealed Liverpool are chasing the Reggina midfielder.
After rubbishing reports that Lazio had been in contact for Mesto, the player's agent, Moreno Roggi, confirmed: "Not all clubs have dropped out because of the transfer fee for Mesto. Liverpool are still interested in him."

Matrix - sorry I have to disagree - Torres doesn't exactly set La Liga alight with this goal scoring record.  I can;t remember when he last scored +20 in a season.
