This way we can have more than 1 established top striker rather than 1 top striker and another striker who always starts on the bench.

Why compromise?  :D    :
                            Reina
            Carra         Skrtel        Agger
Johnson        Mascherano    Alonso      Aurelio
                           Gerrard
             Torres                    Villa

width? check
strong in defense? check
strong in midfield? check
three of the top 6/7 attacking talents in the world? check

Like it but very risky having only 3 at the back. Rafa is always a bit defensive anyway so that seems like the opposite of what he would do.  :D

risky? there are 5 defenders PLUS MASCHERANO. And Alonso isn't exactly a slouch either, and Gerrard never shys away from a tackle.

If anything its too defensive, but I think it more than makes up with the lack of bodies forward with the ammount of quality where it counts.

I think one of the biggest issues would be playing 3 centre halfs when we don't really have a 4th. Both MSJ and Martin Kelly are playing at a high level for the reserves, but are not ready for primetime (although I think Kelly would do really well in the role of the RCB in a back 3 because he is mainly a CB but made a great impression on loan where he played at RB)

Leaving Kuyt out would be an issue, although I think he would be a good option for the right because he works so hard, and has improved his crossing, and has a knack (somehow) for scoring goals.

I think it would give us a reason to keep Dossena because he is probably more suited to a wingback role

But I think the greatest advantage is that opposing teams would have to create an entirely new gameplan for when they played us, or spend twice as much time thinking and questioning how to attack/defend us if we mastered two fundamentally different styles that worked equally well in all kinds of situations.

Oh yeah I didnt really look at the linup i just saw the formation. Looked like 3-4-1-2. :D Space them out a bit more next time yeah? :D

I really want us to get out of this current system. Sure Gerrard gets forward more but I don't like the idea of Torres as our only striker. If he stays injury free the whole season then how often can the other striker(s) expect to play? I suppose it depends on who Rafa brings in also.

This is the face Villa has. A player that wants to play in Madrid or Liverpool, but his team pushes him to sign up for Chelsea.

I can understand he can't sleep.

For some reason I was thinking he would be sorting himself out before returning to Europe. Anyway I wont be suggesting him then.  :D

They cant force him to negotiate with Chelsea can they? At the end of the day if he doesnt want to play for them then he can just be very difficult with negotiations like asking for 300k pweek ect....

Anyway Valencia cant haveany leverage they need the money so eventually they will have to take a deal from someone he is willing to negotiate with.

Wantaway Liverpool midfielder Mascherano set for Barca in £35m deal

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 10:41 PM on 19th June 2009

Javier Mascherano is set to leave Liverpool, with Barcelona preparing a £35million bid.

The Argentine, 25, has told boss Rafael Benitez he needs to leave because his wife, Fernanda, is reluctant to return to England.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed earlier this month that the midfielder was unsettled but Benitez had hoped to persuade him to stay.

However, Fernanda is pregnant, has returned to South America with their daughter Iola and does not want to fly back.

Benitez is understanding but still wants at least £35m for his midfield enforcer.

Mascherano's agent, Walter Tamer, held talks on Wednesday with Barca general manager Raul Sanlehy and sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who will offer around £20m plus possibly striker Bojan Krkic.

The Bojan bit really peaked my attention.....

If thats true....... Masher has NO reason to want to leave Anfield apart from to follow the money.

If he goes he's more mercenary than Michael Owen. To lose Masher and Xabi in one go.... I dont wanna even think about it.

Hang on - i've heard for a while that Masch's wife has struggled to settle and thats what the story relates to.

At what point does money come into it? If my family couldn't settle in a new place, I would move in a heartbeat. You can't doubt the conviction of a man who is still here, despite the fact his wife and 2 kids are nearly 7000 miles away.

Torres has said Mascherano loves Liverpool and I for one don't doubt that. This is one move that, for once, won't involve money but something simple as family. Surely we, given our history and tradition of 'looking after our own' wouldn't begrudge Masch if he did want a move for as simple reason as putting his wife and kids before his love of our club?

How the fu.ck do you work that one out?

Clearly Mascherano is happy with his football here, but being a footballer is a job at the end of the day and if his family aren't happy then he'll be unhappy and probably won't perform to the level he's capable of.  20 million plus Bojan would be a good deal imo.  Benitez has a good record for buying central midfielders, he'd be able to get a decent replacement I'm sure.

The one big problem is him and Alonso being unsettled at the same time.  We really can't afford to lose them both this summer and Benitez won't let it happen.  I still think Alonso's the one more likely to go this summer.  At the end of the day they both have a fair bit of time on their contracts, so they'll do what they're told.  If it means replacing one this summer and the other next summer then so be it.  The club is bigger than any player.

I'd take 20 million plus Keita.

Sounds familiar.... I've been in Brazil for 6 years with a wife and kids and my missus would 'much rather not be here' but she knows we do it for work and money and she's a supporting woman and a great partner. Cant hack the UK after 2 years and not willing to support her husband win the league next year? Gimme a break, thats :censored:, she knows how much it means to the club and the fans. I dont buy into that at all.
