It is understood that following talks with the Dutch international's agent, Benitez has told the winger he is free to talk to other clubs about a possible £11million move.

Babel arrived at Anfield in July 2007 and has scored 14 goals in 91 matches for the club - although only 42 of those were as a starter. But despite early promise, he has failed to hold down a regular place in the side and has mainly been used as an impact player from the bench.

He has reportedly asked for assurances that he will be given more of an opportunity next season.

But following discussions with the player's agent, Winnie Haatrecht, Benitez has been unable to offer such guarantees after starting with Babel only six times in the Barclays Premier League this term.

It has appeared likely for some time that Benitez would be prepared to listen to offers for Babel, and now he is ready to use the 22 year-old to raise cash.

Babel was signed from Ajax, who have appointed Martin Jol as their new manager, but the asking price to re-sign their former player would rule out the Dutch club.

The youngster has admirers in England, with Aston Villa, Tottenham and Arsenal believed to be showing interest. Benitez needs cash to fund a spending spree that could bring Carlos Tevez, David Silva and Gareth Barry to Merseyside. Barry's future at Villa is again in doubt with the club's owner Randy Learner claiming the player would stay at Villa Park after discussions started over a new contract.

But Barry is known to want Champions League football, and Liverpool could sweeten a possible move by including Babel as bait. Villa still want £10m for Barry and a swap deal may suit all parties.

One thing that seems likely is that fees will be all over the map, Diego (who I really would have liked to see at Anfield) to Juventus for 24.5 million, and Sunderland turning down a 20 million bid for Kenwyne Jones.

If 'arry is bidding 20 million for Jones, maybe he'd be crazy enough to offer 15 for Babel :p

Whilst we´re talking to Alonso going, Tevez not coming and in coming Barry being as popular as Babel, how about the prospect of Rafa using the Alonso money to buy Forlan? Covers the loss of Alonso with Barry and gains support for Torres up front.

There is method to the madness.

Am i the only one who thinks that big money signings arent the priority? i honestly believe that our starting XI is far stronger than scumchester utds and its the rest of the squad that has let us down. Don't get me wrong, a big money signing would make my summer, especially a winger in the calibre of say lennon or silva. But i reckon buying a few lads that would sit on the bench and do a job for us week in week out would push us ahead of utd. I mean, i even heard bobby charlton say in the run up to the champions league final that they dont have the best team in england but do have the best squad.

Personally id love to see us bring in a few older players who have the experience needed to be able to come on with 20 minutes to go and perform well, without breaking the bank. Im sure a player like viera wouldnt be that hard to get say, anyone to take lucas' place on the bench :) !

Liverpool in for Spanish starlet Javi Martinez

Rafa Benitez has lined up Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez as a long-term replacement for Xabi Alonso.

Martinez is regarded as one of the best prospects in Spain. And Bilbao, who have the 20-year-old under contract until 2012, want around £10m.

But Liverpool boss Benitez wants to thrash out a cut-price deal.

Liverpool snubbed by Valencia star - Transfer Talk
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is scouring Europe and beyond for a winger after being snubbed by Spain international David Silva.

The Reds boss was preparing a big budget move for the Valencia star only to discover the 23-year-old has pledged his future to the club.

It's a body blow for the Anfield club as David Villa, who also plays for the cash-strapped la Liga outfit, has also decided to stay in Spain.

Silva, who last summer agreed a new seven-year deal with Valencia which ties him to Los Che until 2013, has repeated his desire to stay at the Mestalla.

The Euro 2008 winner, currently sidelined with a thigh injury, said: 'I have to be focused first on recovering to be able to help my team and I'm not thinking of anything else.

'I don't know anything about the rumours and I insist that I have a contract with Valencia that I wish to fulfil.'

Liverpool will be reluctant to move for England international Stewart Downing even though he has been told he can leave Middlesbrough as he is out for six months with a leg injury.

And the need for star players on the flanks has been heightened by Jermaine Pennant's imminent departure with Wigan, Stoke and Portsmouth, where he has been on loan, all keen on his services.

Dutchman Ryan babel has been told he can leave Anfield and Benitez may try to coax Tottenham into a player plush cash deal for Aaron Lennon although he is expected to be knocked back by Spurs boss harry Redknapp.

Benitez may move from Boro defender David Wheater and has to decide whether or not to keep Xabi Alonso, who will be a target for Carlo Ancelotti if he takes over at Chelsea along with Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery.

Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho will raid his former club Chelsea to land defender Ricardo Carvalho and midfielder Deco.

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs has begged fellow winger Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford after the Portuguese international told close friends that the Champions League final would be his last game for the club.

Bolton are set for a double swoop on Portsmouth for midfielder Sean Davis and central defender Sylvain Distin while West Brom midfielder Robert Koren is a target for Birmingham and Wolves.

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who has been strongly linked with a move abroad this summer, says he is happy to stay with the Gunners.

But Norway centre-back Brede Hangeland is ready to reject Arsenal's overtures by committing his future to Fulham.

Juventus have finally captured Diego and, after months of battling for his signature, the Brazilian star has signed for the club officially.

A statement on the club's official website reads:

"Now it's official: Diego Ribas da Cunha is a Juventus player. The Brazilian talent has signed a five year contract which will tie him to the club until June 30, 2014."

Diego is delighted with the move and, before heading back to Germany for the German Cup Final on Saturday between Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen, he stated,

"I am enthusiastic about Juventus and I am proud to be a part of this prestigious club which I have dreamed about since I was a child.

"After my experiences in the Bundesliga and in Portugal, I can test myself in Italy with football of the highest level.

"It's a difficult and competitive league. I think it's the right moment in my career to make this important step and I am convinced I can reach important objectives with Juventus."

The details of the deal are as follows. Juventus will pay Werder Bremen a total of €24.5million. The payments will be broken down into three instalments.

The Italians will make their first payment of €14m on July 1 2009, another €5.5m a year later, and a final €5m on July 1, 2011.

However, Juventus could end up paying Werder an extra €2.5m depending on Diego's achievements with the club over the next five years.

Nistelrooy on the verge of a move to Galatasaray?

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy could be on the verge of a sensational move to Galatasaray after reports surfaced that the Dutch stirker had struck a deal with the Turkish club. The Real Madrid hitman has suffered from a series of injuries since moving to the Bernabeu and could be one of a number of players sacrificed this summer as the club look to restructure their squad.

Milliyet claims that Haldun Ustunel, a director of Galatasaray, travelled to Holland and came to a verbal agreement with the player over the possibility of a move. The club are now expected to speak to the Madrid hierarchy as they attempt to further negotiations.

Much could depend on the plans of the new president this summer, with the favourite for the position, Florentino Perez, rumoured to be willing to sell the Dutch striker.

Van Nistelrooy currently has a deal with Madrid until 2010 but with compatriot Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Gonzalo Higuain and Raul already in the side, he could find himself fighting for a place when he returns.

That Pranjic lad is cropping up again.

Danijel Pranjic Confirms Interest In Potential Liverpool Move

Danijel Pranjic, the Hereenveen winger who scored 16 goals for the Eredivisie club this season, helping them win the Dutch Cup in the process, has reacted favorably to the rumours linking him with with a potential move to join up with Rafa Benitez at Liverpool.

Despite his keenness on swapping the Netherlands for England, Pranjic claims that he would prefer a move to Spain, because of the slower pace of the game and the sunshine. Still, should Benitez get in touch, he could not turn a club like the Merseyside giants down.

"For me it is really, really incredible if I imagine I can play for Liverpool," Pranjic told Sky Sports News.

"It is a dream for every player; it is the biggest club in England.

"I am very fast - I can run a lot and I think that is what you need in England.

"If I can choose between England, or maybe Spain, I would choose Spain because I like that kind of football, that kind of life.

"I like good weather and in England it is always raining, which is what I don't like about England.

"But if Liverpool come for me, of course, I could not say no."

Reports in England today claimed that winger Ryan Babel might well be on his way out of Anfield in the summer, perhaps clearing the way for a move for the 27-year-old Croat, although Babel's agent claims that the Dutchman is going nowhere.

Doesn't really concern us but on SSN they are saying Zirkhov has signed for Chelsea. We were linked with him a few times but I don't think we were ever really interested in him.
