If Hicks wanted to win us over, getting us Villa would certainly help.

Steven Gerrard: Liverpool board must spend  James Ducker

Steven Gerrard has become accustomed to declaring that Liverpool are better equipped than ever to end their long wait for the league title, only to bemoan another failed challenge, but that did not prevent the club's captain from delivering another rallying cry yesterday as he looked ahead to next season.

While there was a genuine gusto with which Gerrard, buoyed by the arrival of Fernando Torres from Atlético Madrid for £26.5 million, proclaimed last summer that Liverpool could win the Barclays Premier League, the midfield player appeared to strike a less assured note this time as the club prepare for a summer of uncertainty. Gerrard made repeated pleas for the board to back Rafael Benítez in the transfer market or risk “falling away”, but the suspicion remains that unless Dubai International Capital wins control of the club or the manager can raise significant funds by offloading players such as Peter Crouch and Xabi Alonso, the possible signing of Gareth Barry from Aston Villa may be the highlight of any summer arrivals.

“Obviously I have to be careful that I don't send expectations through the roof again, but for me I am desperate for it [the title],” Gerrard said. “I believe we can make it happen. We need help and new players and the manager needs help from the board to make these signings happen.

“We say it every year, but it's massive [this summer]. Other teams are going to strengthen and become better sides, so it's important we do the same. It's important we don't fall away. We want to stay up there with the best. It's important Rafa gets the right backing above him as well.

“It's difficult to say how many world-class players [we are away from a title challenge]. If we can make the team a little bit stronger, have a few more options and match-winners and make the team a tiny bit better defensively, we can do it.”

Liverpool had the best record of the so-called “big four” teams during the run-in, taking 32 points from their final 13 league matches compared with the 31 amassed by Chelsea, 29 by Manchester United, the champions, and 23 by Arsenal over the same sequence of games, and Gerrard believes that the club must learn to stop dropping “stupid points” against teams they are expected to beat.

“The title slipped away because of silly results against teams we should be beating,” he said. “You don't have to take maximum points from the top three if you perform perfectly against the others, but we haven't done that.”

I think even Gerrard is begining to become worried about the quality of signings we are rumoured to be interested in.
the possible signing of Gareth Barry from Aston Villa may be the highlight of any summer arrivals.

I think we may need more than Barry to make the step up.

Alves contemplating Sevilla exit

The highly-rated defender is one of the most sought-after players in Europe after impressing at Sevilla over the last few seasons.

A number of clubs including United, Chelsea and Barcelona have been linked with a move for Alves, but Sevilla have resisted all offers for the Brazilian international

Chelsea appear to be out of the running for Alves following their signing of Jose Bosingwa and reports have suggested United are readying a move for the attacking full-back in the summer as they seek a long-term replacement for Gary Neville.

Alves has given his suitors encouragement by revealing that he plans to meet with Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido to try and thrash out his future.

"I am attending a meeting with the president to resolve the subject, but perhaps my cycle has finished in Sevilla," Alves told the Spanish press.

Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona are leading the race for Alves with the player having his heart set on a switch to Camp Nou.

United are also reported to be interested in Alves' team-mate Luis Fabiano who is the top scorer in Spain this season.

The Brazilian's goalscoring exploits have alerted the best clubs across Europe and United could be ready to battle with Real Madrid for Fabiano.

Sevilla have played down reports claiming Manchester United have made a double bid for Alves and Fabiano, but admitted they will consider all offers.

"Sevilla is open to study offers for our players including Luis Fabiano and Daniel Alves, but only if they meet our asking price," a Sevilla spokesman told Skysports.

"Still we have not received any offer and now is the normal time for rumours."

Valencia players David Villa and David Silva have confirmed they are willing to be transferred in order to ease the club's financial difficulties.

Spain star Villa is set to be one of the sought-after signings of the summer, with a host of clubs across Europe reportedly interested.

Spanish newspaper Marca claimed earlier in May that Real Madrid would be prepared to pay Villa five million euros a season to join the Primera Liga champions, plus a transfer fee of 40 million euros which would double the price Valencia paid Zaragoza for Villa in 2005.

Silva, meanwhile, is rumoured to be the target of a 20 million-euro offer from Internazionale.

Valencia are said to be in financial turmoil following their early exit from the Champions League this season, and were helped little by the reported eight million euros they paid in compensation to Ronald Koeman when the Dutch coach was axed in April.

It is believed the club is yet to find a kit sponsor next season and has failed in a bid to sell off their stadium, and move which was predicted to generate 90 million euros for the club this season.

But both players have admitted that if a bid comes in that suits the club they would be ready to leave.

"If the best thing for the club is to get some money and sell me then I'll accept that," Villa told Marca.

"As players we're at the disposal of the club."

However he warned any potential suitors: "I have a long contract, a big release clause and I signed it to fulfil it."

Silva echoed his team-mates comments, saying: "I'm very happy at Valencia but in football you never know what might happen and I'm at the disposal of the club.

"My future will be whatever is best for Valencia."

Villa has scored 21 goals in a season to forget for Los Che this year, while Silva has found the net eight times.

I'm not too sure on Villa and how he would fit into he system of we were to keep it next season.  Id take Silva in a heartbeat though, the kid is class!

If Chelsea swoop for the Valencia Davids and Manchester United get the Brazilian contingent of Sevilla, and we just get Gareth Barry, which is looking like that MIGHT not even happen, I would be very worried.

Whisky-nose is building a fortress - maybe he thinks it better to buy now before LFC receive DIC funds?

Both Chelsea and Man Utd are taking advantage of the fact we dont have a transfer kitty.

The reality is Joe, with these new Chav and Ure buys, they´re extending the gap between themselves and Arsenal and us. Its uphill isnt it and once again vindicates what Keegan said the other day and confirms what Rafa said - that Everton and a very, very, small club.

Grrrr!!!   I hate this if that is true… everyone says to be patient and to remember last year with torres… but its so infuriating that the good players that are available in the positions we need are getting snapped up by the end of May. Utd and chelsea seem to act so quick.

I really like Lahm (well that is until he puts on a utd shirt) and would love him at our club. He'd be just what we need. Good at the back, good going forward, available. C'mon rafa… lets highjack it   :)

love that bit at the end  :D

but in all seriousness what you've said there is true... Even if we do strengthen... they've both strengthened as well.

Nani and Anderson will be a lot better next season as well as Lahm/Alves/Fabiano/ whoever they chose to bring in  will make them even better.

Chelsea's main problem was right back and also injuries. Last season they were without Cech, Terry and Carvalho, for periods and Essien for the ACoN and Drogba for months... but they still only missed out on the league by goal difference  -With a new RB, less injuries and no-doubt further strengthening, they be take some beating.

Yes we dont know who we'll bring in, or how much we're gonna spend, but utd and chelsea will definately be stronger next season... and we're gonna have to go great guns and pull some great signings out of the bag to keep up with them.

-

I know that's a really pessimistic post and the seasons only last finished less than a week ago and that I really need to relax, but it still gets me that unless we act quick and spend big... we'll be in the same position come the end of next season.
