Within a time span of just 15 minutes, it was obviously clear to me that Raul Meireles is miles ahead of Lucas in terms of quality. Raul's movement and quick passing ability certainly raised the tempo up a notch. The ball got passed faster and with more purpose. With Lucas, there was nothing! I've never been impressed with Lucas and probably never will. I dun doubt his commitment but his ability is limited - he's just NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Come January, I hope he will just leave.....PLEASE!

Yet two weeks ago when he signed Hodgson was reported to be so keen to complete the deal so he could start against Blues.

in his cameo he did well to get into dangerous positions and could've scored towards the end. with him and Cole in the team, things can only get better.

Bad Bob wrote:A nice little cameo today (why not sooner, though?) but with a significant question mark raised.  It appeared to me that, when he came on, he took up Stevie's spot "in the hole" and Gerrard slid in next to Poulsen in the centre of midfield.  I think most of us expected him to partner Poulsen eventually, with Gerrard in support of Torres.  Perhaps that's not the plan after all.  Thoughts?

Agree the lad looked decent when he came on although don't forget the game was getting a bit stretched by that point. I imagine it was a bit of safety first to bring him on to play behind Torres with Gerrard dropping back to the middle. Personally i'm hoping to see him partner Gerrard with Cole playing in the hole behind Torres. Also it wouldn't surprise me to see him play the odd game behind the front man. Time will tell. He better get the nod for trafford this weekend.

It's too early even for me on Merieles, as he did a couple of things which were good and one in particular which made me cringe. The good bits were largely his movement and awareness, the boy can definately as Dire Straits once said, play. The worrying bit for me was when he first came on and attempted to challenge for a header. It was a p!sspotically weak attempt where his primary concern was avoiding getting clattered. There were distinct shades of Aquilani in that effort, and hopefully it'll be an isolated incident.

I understand about the header part but not many players come to PL and jump straight in for a tackle or a header. There's always a bit of uneasiness but it should come with time, i'd say he won't be so scared like Aqua in saying that we could of done with Aqua against Birmingham even if he does jump out of challenges. I just hope Meireles can become a success and fairly quickly because we need it!

Two very different players imo him and Aquilani... Personally im a big fan of Aquilani, but i realize it must be a headache for managers trying to get him in the side given what he offer or rather what he doesnt..

Meireles for me is the more mobile of the 2.. He's faster and covers more ground and is probably way more suited to the English game than the Italian was.. We should play him in the middle alongside Poulsen and give him more attacking freedom than given to the likes of Lucas and Alonso over the years... Personally I'd move Gerrard higher up (either AM or RW) and look to provide Meireles more space centrally to operate...

What I like about him more than anything is that hes comfortable carrying the ball forward through the middle... With our poor movement higher up (the likes of Maxi, Babel, Kuyt, Jova are particularly poor in that aspect) we'll sometimes need that unexpected burst through the middle that only Meireles and Gerrard can provide..

lets see how many goals and assists miereles gets. Aqua got 6 assists and 2 goals and that was half fit and in 13 games.

Look - I didn't want him to go as well but posting about him in every single thread is futile now - he will never play again for us so it's time you moved on .
