The Premiership - General Discussion

The midfield has to be either Gerrard-Miereles-Joe Cole or Poulsen-Miereles-Gerrard.

I hope Lucas is already on the way home to Brazil.

All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

That front 5 works for me. Be very surprised if Pachecho gets a start though. He'll play tomorrow i would have thought.

Be good to get a good look at him. Hopefully Roy sees enough of him over about 60 minutes and then takes him off to keep him fresh for the weekend when he might start  :)

I know it’s early, but.....

I thought Raul played well today. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a player (other than Gerard) sit in the middle of the park and pull the strings and he did it with ease today, especially in the second half.

This lad looked composed, comfortable and creative. I don’t want to compare him with Alonso, just yet, but he looked good today and gives us something we;ve desperately been lacking.

Yep started quietly and his passing was a bit of target but as the game wore on he got into it and linked the midfield with the forwards really well - very composed on the ball - good signs

Just what we need, patience, composure and a bit of guile in midfield.  Not setting the world ablaze with his passing ability but his vision is great and he has the patience to wait for a pass forward to open up.  Lucas and Poulson do not have this, at all, and at times neither does Stevie.  Lucas and Poulson need that perfect setting to even dare to attempt passes that aren't easy and tidy..  Well I can't speak for Poulson yet but Lucas definitely does not possess the traits this guy does.

The passes Lucas makes do not create any space for the players but the little 1-2's Meireles was playing later in the match are the type of stuff we need to make space for everyone else, things like that or Alonso's long range passing create space while what Lucas and Poulson do just makes it harder and harder for everyone to get some breathing room from defenders, they know all they have to do is pressure more and more before we start hoofing it downfield.

You're right about Lucas, he doesn't posses the passing ability to run things from the centre.

i think we'll see better passing as Raul builds confidence in our squad. However, for his first 90mins, i was very impressed with him today.

I thought he did alright but I wouldn't do flip-flops. He's obviously got some ability, I just can't quite work out what type of midfieder he is going to be. If anybody else can, can you give us an example of a player either recent or current that he reminds you of? I thought he perhaps had a touch of a young Alexandra Hleb about him in posession, but maybe not.

he doesn't remind me of Aquilani, that's for sure  :D

But, i'm going to stick my neck out and say...he reminds me of Alonso.  :nod

now, if he turns out like Alonso is another matter...
