Raul Meireles - Rent Boy Mark II

The Premiership - General Discussion

Never rated him much. I'd not have sold him to Chelsea, but the games where he failed to show up outnumber his good games by far. The squad's not stronger for this loss, but it sure ain't much weaker.

i am just very glad we did not loan wee Spearing out.
he can do a good job when needed, and help out with his development.

i think with the situation with Raul, sooner or later he will be unhappy with sitting on the bench, n we still have to sell.
so why not rob chelskit during the death ??

how much did we get for Raul? undisclosed?

1. We've lost a decent squad player to one of our rivals.

Reasons to be positive:
1. We've just got £15m for a 28 yr old squad player who doesn't get in the starting line up.
2. We've signed one of the best young centre halves in World football.
3. We've signed 3 midfielders who all got more assists than RM did last year.
4. We've got rid of Degen, Poulsen, N'Gog, Cole, Koncheski.
5. We've got Gerrard coming back real soon.
6. We've got Johnson coming back real soon.
7. We've got some of the most exciting youngsters in the country coming through.
8. We've got Suarez.
9. Kenny's our manager.
10. G&H are gone!!
11. Everton's just lost their best player in years!!
12. Arsenal have just replaced Fabregas and Nasri with Yossi and Arteta!!

I could go on. You complainers should remember this time 12 months ago. I'm a little disappointed but hey-ho, the glass is more than half full for me.

good post, loosing Meirelles was unfortunate, but its hardly anything to cry over

Not that dissapointed though slightly surprised we let him AND Aquilani go, that said if they don't want to be here.

We've lost a good player. He'll always be remembered for his spectacular goals in 5 consecutive games in the last campaign. But if he went to the extent of handling a transfer request, then there's no point in keeping a player who doesn't want to be here. The same applies to anyone current player. The most important are, the club is in good financial standing, a great manager in charge and who is good in recognising and signing/developing young players. Good Luck to Liverpool in challenging for a CL place. YNWA.

SSN are reporting £12 million.

Club didn't want to give him a pay rise and Chelsea offer that plus CL footy and a manager that will perhaps appreciate him more than Kenny did, not surprised he moved on.

Sorry to see the fella go, after Gerrard he was imo as good if not better than anyone else we have in midfield.

He was a decent enough player , he had a great period around Jan and Feb but was quiet throughout the rest of the season . Disappointing that he went to the chavs but not overly gutted about it .

Oh ACE he wasn't PFA Player of the Year - he won some fan award that was voted for in Feb/Mar

definitely not happy waking up today and seeing his name in the transfer updates. a lot has been said about his actual value to the team, his ability etc etc but Raul was the one player last season bar Suarez, that inspired hope in me. in such a short space of time, he managed to endear himself to not just me, but to everyone else i'm sure, and what followed that assist at arsenal with the sarcastic middle finger and all that just showed how well he got along with the squad.

its evident that he's a popular guy within the team and i'm just personally sad to see him go. to chelsea of all places, gahh i hate that fuxking team. its going to be painful to see him run out in blue.

that was the same guy who practically said 'fu.ck you fernando, up yours.' for all of us once upon a time. :(  i wish him well, and i will always remember him for that.

His defensive game is questionable and all those factors paired with a tendency to play the long ball dont aid much in maintaining a fluid style of play or controlling the tempo of the game. When Carroll is played is when we'll really have problems with Adam imo. For starters, we'll be short on numbers in the middle and his lack of mobility will mean that he stays deeper and relies more heavily on playing the longer ball thus leading to us giving up possession for large chunks of the game. Add to that his lack of tackling skills and we're in trouble at both ends. He's better suited (Adam) to a 3man midfield where he gets protection from 2 players and gets more freedom and space to pick out his passes but that doesnt really make him a better option than Meireles.

The left footed Adams as a complement to Lucas is the reason we finally have balance in central midfield.

Balance in the middle ? We'll see about that.

2ndly the range of passing that Adams brings to the game is beyond the abilities of Mierreles.

Range of passing doesnt mean jack sht ! Its all about the transition of play and Adam more often than not does a sht job bringing other into play. Meireles on the other hand helps the players around him get into the game and further has the option of carrying the ball himself to get attacks started. Long ball to Carroll isnt my cup of tea but if its how you think the game should be played then its your choice.

Crikey you don't like Adam do you? It sounds as if you've already written him off by that critique as some sort of pub player. This is a guy who was outstanding last year in a poor side and has shown flashes of absolute quality for us already. Passing range means jack sh#t? Well I guess you should tell that to Alonso when he was here.

I don't see how th fact that he is frequently looking for the penetrative pass can be seen as a negative because Steven Gerrard has been doing that for years with limited success and nobody has really batted an eyelid because he's Steven Gerrard. He has picked out some lovely passes in these first 3 games, mainly right to left to the likes of Suarez and Downing running out to in.

Ok his defensive awareness needs to be improved upon quite a bit but maybe I'm one of those fans who wants to focus on what a player can do and appreciate that rather than constantly look at the negative and criticise what a player can't do.

I dont think we could ever guarantee him a starting position, the problem is is that what the feck is his best position?

On the right? Not really
Holding mid? I wouldnt say so
Attacking midfielder? Maybe

Average in too many games last season( although to be fair to him he was played all over ).

Selling him though hopefully concludes one issue. The fact that stevie is on the way back !

There were lots of rumours that he is finished, we would not have got rid of meireles if that was the case! ( hopefully :p )

Im really disappointed with the lad.  The fact he handed in a transfer request shows that he was desperate to leave and we were reluctant to sell.

Certainly leaves us short in CM.  Lets pray Adam and Hendo stay fit at least until Stevie returns.

everyone keeps mentioning it, but i don't think we're too short in CM. We could quite easily switch to 4-4-2 with suarez and carroll upfront, Downing and Kuyt on the wings then with 4cm's: Lucas, Henderson, Adam and Spearing challeging for two places until Stevie returns. Also Shelvey can come off the bench when we're winning to give others a rest when needed.   It's not ideal, but it's manageable.

Well, maybe we're not exactly short... but it piles a lot of pressure on the new signings.

And if we picked up an injury or two, it would pile a lot of pressure on Gerrard to come back in top form after 4 or 5 months out.

IIRC when Didi moved on due to a packed midfield. By end of injury blighted campaign we were wishing he had never left
