The question with Aquilani is do we accept here and now that he isn't up to it, and get as much of the 20 million quid back that we spent on him as we can? On the other hand do we gamble that he suddenly gets it, keep him for another season but run the risk of his value plumetting even further?

My call is to get shut. I very much doubt anyone in England will want him, but someone in Spain might think he can do a job. In Italy anythings possible, someone gave us 4 million quid for Dossena after all so all is not lost. I'd be making discreet enquiries about now just to see if anyone wants to take him off our hands. It'd be great if we played Portsmouth at Home every week, but unfortunately we don't.

I'd keep Aquilani, both because I have trust in his quality, and because I don't think it's a good idea to sell quickly a player that costed 20M without giving him games.

Quality always prevails, and just like it was a bad idea to sell Alonso for low teens instead of waiting a better opportunity to sell, I wouldn't sell Aquilani quickly.

Not before sitting down Lucas and giving the chance to Aquilani to prove himself.

That said, we cannot give him half the time we gave to Lucas or Babel, I'd like to see results from the very beginning of next season.

If Aquilani doesnt start every game (fitness permitting) beside Masch then rafa should walk.

He was class vs Pompey and finally looked that he was now settling into the team ..following 8 month injury lay off, and becoming accustomed to the pace of the English game as well as being familiar with new team mates. The boy is ready.

The defence splitting pass he played to Torres for his 2nd showed an air of confidence/authority.. and we havent seen a solitary pass like that from a central midfielder since Alonso left.

Rafa doesnt have the balls of top coaches hence didnt put him in at United, and instead we had the inevitable toothless midfield with lucas. But theres no risk now for Aquilani... he has to play. Two reasons,

One.. to salvage this season where we have a chance (slim) for 4th, also UEFA Cup.
Two.. to bed in fully so hes raring to go next season.

In that case I agree he should have played 90 mins.

Anyway he would have been bullied by the Manchester United players, in that stadium the local players are able to play with aggressivity where as the opposition is not allowed to do it.

In that stadium Howard Webb can see a penalty, when he's only able to give 3 penalties a season.

I'll be absolutely staggered if he doesn't start at the weekend. It's an ideal game for him. We don't need two defensive midfielders at home to Sunderland.

Do we ever need two DMs at home? Yet it is Rafa's preference, I could just about understand it against top sides away, although even then why set out simply to defend, but at home?!!??!

You'd think under the circumstances with him "guaranteeing" fourth that defence would take a back seat to attack, but nah
