Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Christ.. every man and his poodle knows what rafa said as regards Owen.. the worst kept secret is he didnt want him as the generals formation 4-2-3-1 is not conducive to a player in Owen who cant hold the ball up, doesnt link play, and heavily relies on a partner to feed off in a 4-4-2. Both Gab Marcotti and Guillem Ballague were on the radio during ths period stating as much... Rafa did not want him,.. he wanted an Angulo mk II... hence he soon bought Morientes, followed by Crouch, followed by Torres...lone frontmen that can hold up the ball. His token "effort" for Owen in 2005 even more laughable.. *awaits link to quotation of rafa willing to sell Montse to get little mickey back*

He is without doubt a control freak... the club is over run with his henchmen.. shrewdly.. because to sack him means a pay off that could feed a small county for a year. Anyone that dares to give an opinion (Pako), backchat or swing golf clubs (Bellamy), or god forbid wants to see the birth of their child (Xabi) ..is not following orders, and are soon goose stepping out of Melwood, forced to seek pastures new.

You just implied Owen's departure was part of a plan to break up a clique? Now you're saying he was sold because he couldn't hold the ball up which Rafa didn't like? So instead of selling Baros - who was a damn sight worse at holding the ball up and infinitely inferior by comparison - he chose Owen instead for some reason (is this where the clique factor comes in? :D ).

His sale had nothing to do with the fact that Owen had one year left on his contract, was already in talks with Madrid and wanted to move on to further his career. Man that is deluded. Rather, Rafa didn't rate him and wanted to break up a clique.

I see where you're coming from on this

Anyone that swing a golf club at a player SHOULD get done in by Rafa's 'henchmen'  :D

Not adverse to reading a bit of fiction,, but I prefer factoids.. and the clique of 4 were broken up and told to sit elsewhere... subsequently Owen felt as though the club werent pushing enough for him to sign... because the general had no interest in him staying, and his sale allowed for the signing of rafas #1 target Alonso. And err... who laid it off for Gerrard to win the pen in Istanbul?? Some greasy haired Czech fella i believe.

Btw i changed it to poodle to make it more applicable to you.

Rafa is not a control freak

He leaves everything to chance
He does not scrutinise, analyse or go over anything in depth with a fine tooth comb
He does not pick the formations, tactics, style of play, players or staff
He team is run on a whim, he never has a plan and improvises everything
He is a firm believer in letting the chips fall where they may and always takes the blame when things go wrong

Would a control freak do any of this?

???

Kerry07 wrote:Not to deviate from this lucas non appreciation society... but the first thing general Franco...sorry Rafa... observed when he walked through the door at Melwood, was the clique of Gerrard, Owen, Carra and the Murph sitting together at the canteen table. This spelt trouble for raf.. as a tight knit group within a group made it a harder dressing room for him to dictate/control. So he broke them up...weakened player power/opinion. Discarded two (he had zero intention of keeping Owen) and made people sit with a different player each week. In 2003 he did the same at Valencia and was quoted as doing so.

This isolating players so they dont build up close ties means there is no mutiny.. no insubordination...as this is rafas ship, he alone is steering it. Pako was dumped overboard as he dared to differ with rafa in a few team matters... then stated he "no longer knew him". Having got rid of him he then got rid of Parry and co.. and is the ONLY manager in the league that has TOTAL control of transfers... and answers to no one.

Hes a control freak... hence his love of obedient yes men (lucas/kuyt) regardless of their lack of talent.

1) "I was very happy with Michael and I wanted him to stay. The problem was he only had a year left on his contract," said Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

Link

I remember him saying the same thing in a press conference.

2) Mutiny, insubordination etc.

3) I never really got the 'greater control of transfers' thing. Top flight managers in this country typically have the final say on who comes and who goes, while the board determine the budget. That's right since it's the manager's role to shape the team and the board's role to manage the finances. Other than in rare instances (our pursuit of Barry for example), I fail to see much room for overlap between the two areas.

5) The persistent selection of Kuyt and Lucas is evidence of a cautious management style, yes.

Separately, there are legitimate questions to be posed about his man-management style but to be as specific and absolute as to say he's a 'control freak' and a 'dictator' on the basis of the evidence available is ridiculous.

In otherwords, or in my terms, he's talking a big tonne of f*cking sh*te!  :)
