The Alonso Thread - hands in transfer request

Just one question to people on here:

Presuming we get Barry, but we then need to sell Xabi in order to get more funds.

Would you still say we hold on to Xabi and refuse to sell?

I'd rather see the funds that would be going toward Barry's transfer put toward a winger or 2nd striker in the first place and leave Xabi right where he is.  IMO, Barry is not a perceptable improvement on Alonso and I'm worried we're going to waste time and money replacing like for like in the strongest area of our squad while leaving our problem positions unaddressed...again.

I agree Bob, but it's undeniable that Rafa is after Barry.

My question was, IF he did get Barry, would you sell Xabi?
Yes or No?

Glod Bless America.

Yeah, I do appreciate what's he's done in his first few years. But he's become substitute material in my eyes. We don't need him anymore, just wasting money.

no, i'd sell Lucas...

What could we do with £5M though?

Non of us know what funds Rafa has this season, but he might need more than  what he'd
get for Lucas.

I guess it depends on a couple of things, mate--one of which you mentioned already:

1) Do we need the money from Alonso's sale to finance other transfers?
2) Will Barry be brought in to play CM?

If the answer is yes to both questions than I would sell Alonso--not least because it would be tantamount to an admission from Rafa that Alonso is surplus to requirements.

If we do sell Alonso, though, I hope it is for a tasty sum and I hope that the proceeds go to bringing in some true attacking quality.  Part of the reason why I could cope with losing Garcia's moments of magic when we sold him last summer is because it helped smooth the way for Torres to come the other way.  If we must cash in on Xabi, I'd like to see something similar.

We more quality up front - there is no point holding on to Xabi if it means we can't then strengthen
up front.

Exactly my point. He's not trash, but he's useless to us. We don't need him anymore. He's not going to help the attack, and I personally think our defending is strong enough, so why keep him?

Typical canadian, always trying to find mistakes that their neighbor does and undermining them  :no  :D

I think we need to keep xabi because he is one of our best players, selling him will be a mistake IMO

I dunno, lad, he was pretty useful in the build-up to Kuyt's goal against Chelsea at Anfield.  Helping the attack is more than playing the final ball.  has he been subpar by his standards of late?  Certain ly.  Is he surplus to requirements if Barry comes?  Possibly.  Is he useless to us?  Not in the slightest. :no

Excuse me for my "Glod" you know, my third language is not that great.

 Useless  (edited because I respect Joe Terp and his country)

*takes breath 10 seconds*

1.-) He's not going to help the attack? Excuse me, but the start of plays in football is probably one of the most important moments when a team's attack starts. Choosing the right pass, spotting the run of the mate running in the wing, knowing when to wait, knowing when to give pace to the game. Football is not about "assists" and "goals". Do you honestly think a team like Juve, or a crowded with quality Spanish squad would summon a useless player in attack?

2.-) The defence. The reason why I think Alonso is a better player now than 4 years ago. So has acknowledged Aragones aswell. These 4 years in Alonso career has not been a decline, he's actually a tougher midfielder without the ball.

You like Mascherano more? fair enough, it will be a majority of fans who'll preffer Mascha. Still, you need quality people when he's not available, if you want to win everything.
