Actually keep him until the summer, maybe the funds might get spent properly with Rafa gone......................................

Two basic flaws with the idea of selling Mascherano : 1) We might get £30m, but how much of that would we get to spend? and 2) it is RAFA spending the money, we'd probably end up trying to buy Heskey back for £12m, Bellamy for £25m or Crouch for £17m. I'm sure £30m could be used effectively, but I think Rafa long since moved on from looking for bargains and would try and buy big again and again and again. The one thing that has gone DOWN in the past five seasons is the number of players bought

05/06 : 11 @ £2.7m average
06/07 : 9 @ £5.1m average
07/08 : 8 @ £6.06m average
08/09 : 6 @ £6.63m average
09/10 : 3 @ £13m average

06/07 was some achievement considering we bought Mascherano and Kuyt that season, but also signed Aurelio, Paletta, Arbeloa and Voronin for £4.6m combined. We spent more in 06/07 and 07/08, but that was mainly because we signed more players :

06/07 & 07/08 : 17 players, £94.40m (£5.55m average)
08/09 & 09/10 : 9 players, £78.80m (£8.76m average)

All but twice as many players for only £15.6m more. And for that £78.8m did we get more quality? Nope, we spent near half of that on Dossena £7m, Keane £20.3m, Cavalieri £3m and Riera £8m which adds up to £38.3m and not a lot of first team appearances this season combined - in Keane's case because we sold him already! Take another £20m for Aquilani and Rafa's spending record is poor, so selling Mascherano might mean we buy more or better players for the benefit of the squad, but more likely we'll end up with more Rieras, Keanes, Cavalieris, Dossenas and maybe another Aquilani.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

Has he can you please go over it in detail Michael

  :D I know it's like fecking groundhog day in here. You have a big debate about it, everyone digs up all the stats, it gets kind of accepted, everyone goes "oh OK then, lets talk about something else", then loh and behold three months later someone else comes along and you have to go over the whole thing all over again. Obviously you get some people who were still here for the original debates who insist on sticking their oars in, but I guess once you've established the fact that you are a numpty for all to see, confirming it once again isn't such a huge leap of faith.

So we can do the argument again about how far behind we were when Rafa took over. Someone will talk about how we were 30 points behind in his first season, someone will talk about how those same players won the Champions League, someone will mention Djimi Traore, someone will dig deeper and point out that a couple of seasons into Rafa's tenure we were 1 point behind the Mancs and we've outspent them since them. We can go alla round the houses just one more time.

At least that is a debate though. To say we haven't outspent both arsenal and the Mancs since Rafa has been in charge, Net, Gross, in Lira, add-ons, air miles, green shield stamp points, Bazooka Joe wrappers, Monoploly money, play money, real money or imaginary money is just b0ll0cks.

It's pretty hard to debate something when everyone knows before you start that it's b0ll0cks. With that in mind, can't we just not bother any more? A good idea when you stick your hand up when they ask "who believes in this?" is to have a quick look around and see who agrees with you. Take a quick look through this thread and you'll see all you need to know really.

That's where a little bit of internet savviness comes really useful bigmick... you add in the link of the original debate and type something like what lfc2007 would say "I refer you to this post"... not everyone can keep track of all discussions going on on this board.  :;):

Do you mean like when in last summer we all agreed we had made some progress, more or less slow, and it had been a good season, only to discover months later that our manager 4-5-1 is appalingly limited, and worse than Houllier?

Yes, that's how a football forum works everywhere  :D

Don't be surprised if in some months we have RAFA RAFAYELL RAFA RAFAYELL RAFA </Liverpool accent> shouts all over the place and you have to come back to explain again everything when it has been accepted that he shouldn't be our manager.

You can try to redirect the course of a river everyday... or you can accept the natural course and let it go... in no case you'll have the river as you wish, but if you let it go at least you don't waste unvaluable efforts!

Happy new year and decade everybody!

Would United sell to raise cash? NO
Would Chelsea sell to raise cash? NO

Why should we sell our best assets taking us backwards to flog it all on useless flops when we know we have possibly the best DM in the world right here.

No thanks. :)

how longs he got left on his contract? i think its about 2 years but i could be wrong, if its anything less than that i'd sell him. I think he wants out so he'll just run out his contract anyway, so if its anything less than 2 years we should get our moneys worth now. The last thing we want is to get next to nothing for him this time next year.
If we were to sell him ,we'd probably get pav off of spurs for less than 10m considering his value has surely gone down since he moved from moscow, scott parker would be a direct replacement for masch but his age does worry me. Also, with the 12 or 13m (i'm assuming there stitched on at this stage) we get from doss and babel we should still be able to make a profit in the window.
Having said that, i'd keep masch until summer at least if he's got another 2 years left on the contract.

Not that I think anything will happen in January but...

The only way I would sell him would be if we had a suitable replacement as part of the deal. Let's not make the same mistake as with Alonso. I am not sure who a suitable replacement would be but with Barca appearing to be the main suitors for Mascha then you are looking at Yaya Toure as the stand out.

Everyone always says Liverpool are a 2 man team.

For me we have 4 world class player Reina, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres (Carragher not too far away, maybe not this eason though).

Those 4 players have to stay!!! .....and let's get another 2 not sell em!!

exactly, i'm amazed so many people are voting to sell him. What happens when we sell him and buy a player that can't settle into the side. We should keep all good players and add to them by selling the cr.ap players.

Completely amazed people are voting to sell him!!  :no

Javier has apparently been speaking to Maxi in persuading him to come to Liverpool.

Nice swan Mascha, I don't think the monster is going anywhere. :;):
