Ok so basically my passport expires October 2010 and I am planning on going to Amsterdam for a few days in April (2010).

I heard there is a cut of time in which you can travel on your passport (6 months?) but I thought that maybe doesn't apply to if you are just going somewhere in Europe.

Just to state the obvious I am a British Citizen

Will I have anything to worry about if I travel on my current passport?

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: The best resource here is the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website, which lists travel advice by country. Under each is a heading on passports, which tells you the amount of validity that must be remaining in your passport in order to visit.

It varies from country to country, with the most liberal being places like France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Malta, which only require that your passport be valid for the duration of your visit.

Next you'll find countries that need your passport to be valid for at least 30 days after the end of your intended visit, like New Zealand and South Africa.

Some others, like Croatia and Estonia, need three months validity at the time you enter.

For some countries though, having less than six months left on your passport precludes you from visiting, like Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, and oddly enough, Belgium.

Thanks Saint. I checked that before and all it said about passports was this-

Passport validity

All British passport holders require a valid passport to enter the Netherlands.

I guess based on that I should be ok but I might just give the Dutch Embassy in London a call tomorrow.

Think most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 90 days .

Anyway mate, your passport expires in oct next year and you're planning to do some travelling beginning April next year. F'ucks sake mate, GET YOURSELF A NEW TEN YEAR PASSPORT IN MARCH, where's the problem ?

Yeah Bav like Woof said the simplest thing to do is to just get a new passport

It sorts everything out and you will have no worries

Ah that is such a hassle and I am only going for 3 days. Will swing by the post office and see how painful the process is.

I know it sounds silly doesnt it

I but I don't plan to go anywhere next year so was just going to leave it till I need to travel next. Ah feck it may as well just get the thing renewed. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if I would still be ok if i didnt but I guess not worth taking the risk,

Yes that seems smart thing to do but just to pedantically accurate

Get yourself a Ten year passport which really is only a 9 and half year passport cause its sods all useless for last six months

If your not planning on getting away next year then you mights as well just wait mate.
Its quite expensive getting a new passport and your old one will be fine for that one trip.
I think its about £75. to get a renewal which is robbery.

I called their embassy today and they said British Citizens only need to have a passport valid for the duration of their trip so im fine.

I bet the bloke at the embassy was winding you up. Wait and see. Once you get there, they'll nab you, throw you in a dark cell with a heavy breathing mongol, and the following morning, ship you off to the Dutch Antilles to do 10 years hard labour....
