As debuts go, it was just okay.  He showed that he can be aerially dominant but he also got beaten in the air by Davies in the build-up to their second.  On the deck, he seems slow (as you would expect) but also a little to loose with his passing.  A couple of times he fed the ball to Masch when the Argie had a man right on his heels.  Still, he's new to the team and to the league and I'm not prepared to judge him on one game.  I doubt he'll turn out to be a world beater but he might just do a passable job of filling Big Sami's shoes for the time being.

I agree that his passing was a little lose...but on davies goal, he got tripped up and fell, he could have done better defending the leadup to the goal... But Mascherano/Lucas' fault moreso for not tracking the midfield run . It was his first game. You can bring in Puyol and even he wouldnt have a perfect first game. He'll get used to the pace and adjust himself. No one expects him to keep up stride for stride with the leagues best. Just like you cant expect another player to do what kyrgiakos does best. Every player must play with their strengths. Soto is capable of positiong himself in order to address the speedsters of this league.

Did you guys see how soto immediately upgrades the set pieces. He makes so much more room for his teamates because he comands extra attention from the opponents & he will always get his head on the ball. Even if he misses, it wories the other team, and puts them on their toes for the next set piece. He will score a few for you guys this year. He will do a great job. I just bought his jersey from the liverpool site.

I agree, mate.  I definitely think he'll improve and get used to the pace of things.  Skrtel had an absolute mare on his debut and he's done alright so don't think I was writing the big lad off on the basis of one performance.  :)

I thought defensively he did alright to be honest, although there'll be much sterner tasks ahead if he plays regualrly. He won his share of headers without actually being Hyppiaesque, and I really liked one block where the fella did Carragher on the edge of the box and the Greek had to come from behind his man and throw his body in.

On the ball he had a wee bit of the rabbit in the headlights about him, and not unlike Sami my suspicion is that when he plays his lack of pace is going to make us defend 10-15 yards deeper. On the bright side he takes up some good positions when attacking a set-piece, and he would probably score the odd goal if he plays regularly.

On the whole though I think he did quite well, although a more tricky and mobile opponent than Davis could really embarrass him I think.

I thought he played quite well and only made one or 2 mistake. But at least we were winning some headers last night. You can say he was faulted for the second goal but he did well in not letting Davis headed the ball easily. It was just a lucky bounce to an unoccupied player in which our CM should covered. So, he played well in his debut in general.

I think he's an absolute doppelgänger for Razor  :D , but in all seriousness yesterdays performance was all over the place ,and just places particular emphasis on the importance of having more than 1.5 million to spend on a defender ,especially one who is about to be thrown into a back line leaking goals  profusely .
This is Liverpool and third rate central defenders, bought at a time when the Reds season could seriously implode, simply should not sit right with me or any other Liverpool fans

Doesn't look to good.... anyways good luck to the lad.

He grew into his playing style once he entered the bundesliga and started shining for the NT. He is good, trust me. He's the type of player who sacrifices everything for his team and is not afraid of anybody. He is a very proud individual and he seems to be honoured coming to anfield. He couldnt wait to le the public know. Watch him in any NT game, even in euro 2008 where Greece underperformed, he was still a dynamo on the field. Every panathinaikos fan was begging for him in transfer season, but he is not tight with our owner and they did not want to deal with eachother. He's even greece's highest rated player in FIFA 2009 (video game) :eyebrow

I remember a little while ago while still at frankfurt, he had just come back from a broken nose, and he wasnt at all hesitant to jump into 50/50 balls. He ended up breaking his nose for the 2nd time in his first game from injury and he refused to come off. Soto is a warrior.

Are you his boyfriend?

Please tell me this isnt a dig at the collison with carra which was clearly his fault not skrtels

Not for the first time you're commenting on one of my posts and getting yourself all in a muddle. The answer to your question is no it isn't a dig at the collision between him and Carragher. Do you know what I mean by "ball watching", it's just that yours is a very strange question indeed  ???

I'd have a wee look in the Skyrtel thread, there's bound to be an explanation of my view in there. Once you understand what I'm actually on about then you can comment from there.

By ball watching do you mean when you watch the 100 sprint on slow-mo monkeyman?

& ill comment on whatever i want lad

it is obviously too early to comment about the guy, but he's our 4th choice centre back and, for the money, should do the job.

He won't get a look in once Agger and Skyrtel are fit.
