The problem it seems to me is one of timing. Yes we need centre back cover (no really, we do) and yes we need cover for Torres (ditto) and we probably also need cover for the right back, but the season has already started. We really could have done with getting ourselves sorted out three or four weeks ago, and this is even more the case given that Aquilani isn't going to be available for a while.
I've said on the Spurs match thread that there was an over reaction to the defeat and there was. That said, it's not inconcieveable to me anyway that we could very quickly find ourselves out of any title race if we're not careful. If Skyrtel has done his jaw, then he ain't going to be playing and if Agger still isn't fit we are absolutely down to the bones. Similarly, people who are expressing concerns about Torres's form are entitled to ask who else have we got?
Whoever we need right now, we probably needed about four or five weeks ago to be perfectly honest, and although we did well getting the money we did for Alonso the time it took is impacting upon us now.
If it was me I'd forget about the lad from Hull, I'd bite the bullet and buy Mathew Upson from West Ham. He would instantly IMHO go into our first team. Also, I'm probably getting as tired saying it as people are hearing it, but I'd buy Tuncay to give us an option up top. Krankjaar would give us options accross the middle of the park until Aquilani is fit.
Those talking of selling players on are about two months late I reckon. Whatever anyone thinks of Babel and Lucas, the last thing we need to be doing as of now is selling players on. Besides which, the reason why we still have Lucas, Babel, Voronin and Dossena is because nobody else really wants them lets be honest about it.
Last season though in the Summer we wantonly spunked 40 million quid. This Summer we haven't wasted money so much, as a whole lot of time.
