Simple because there'd be no space for him against the sides that just stick 11 men behind the ball or even if there was space he'd need somebody to flick it on for him and Torres isn't that sort of player. He doesn't have the pace anymore to get onto Stevie's through balls. So I would fail to see just how Owen would have fitted this side even though I still consider him one of the best finishers in the league.

At United he has forwards who drop off in Rooney and Berbatov so they can slide the ball through where he doesn't have to run further than 10 yards.

Just take a look at how many of Kuyts goals (and CHANCES) are scored/missed in and around the 6 yard box. I think Owen would still have got his share of chances.

I agree that Owen wouldn't be a plan "b" player, but as a player to add to our attack when needed he would have been ideal. Sticking him on in a game alongside Torres when we are 0-0 and I think it would have a little more impact than bringing Voronin or Wash on.

Owen will always get goals, and with Gerrard having two strikers to set up, it would make it all the harder for defenses to cope. All pie in the sky now anyway   :(

I thought I had better correct the spelling of Owen before I got pulled up too  :D

I just don't think Owen would have worked at all. And Rafa thought that way so it's one up for me  :D

Woaa... new Gybs in the making eh.. atleast he doesnt stick to one liners so thats something of a relief...

anyways on the subject of the thread... LUCAS... big times ahead of him until Aquilani is fit... make or break... if he doesnt get the job done then what ? Should we be in for another midfielder, maybe someone who can play in the middle aswell as a little further up (gerrard cover + CM insurance policy) ?

You obsessed with me or something or do you have a problem with someone who speaks positively about our own club and players and rate them highly as opposed to loving our rivals ( namely the mancs) and blowing smoke up their ar.ses .

Having read Baldricks posts its really refreshing and great to see someone being so positive about our players and being confident and agree with most of his posts .

As he showed with his goal the other day, one of his major strengths is his ability to ghost into the box. Hopefully we'll see more of that this season.

It's a massive season in every respect for the guy but the one thing that's going in his favour is his very strong mentality.

He does seem alot more able when he doesn't have defensive duties I like him in more attacking role.I like him going down the right as well he seems to understand it.I feel Rafa might look to using Lucus this season when Gerrard needs a rest and play him in same area and you know what ! I think it might just work.

As for his goal It was wonderful finish any striker would have been happy with that and you don't see that in midfielder very often.I meen look at fat frank he rarely scores a goal that calm he always need 100 blasts at goal before one manages in bounce of 10 players and go in lucky A**.

In all seriousness most premiership footballers should be able to score when alone with the keeper so I'm not ranking it as one of the best goals I have ever seen but it was confidently taken and that is always a good thing.

BTW Ace, stop supporting manure you bloody plastic fan.  :)
Just switch off your brain, follow the dogma and don't ever question Rafa, ok!!   :D

I have my doubts regarding Lucas but hope that he proves everyone wrong and has a cracking season.  He has been under the shadow of Alonso and Mash but that is some shadow to be under and good luck to the bloke.

Again we see scepticism from some people if we get a positive poster.  I thought we had a new start on the forum.  I like Baldricks style and hope he continues.  He argued his point well and didnt get drawn into an argument which is exactly what the not so positive posters said they wanted.  He is happy to get his point across without personal attacks and they were excellent points IMO.

I hope that he can make another step up this season, last season he was better than the season before and with the added experience combined with being given more of a chance this season he may turn some heads. If Masch sits deep and Gerrard plays of Torres then Lucas can play in between and may be able to play the role differently to Alonso and get forwards more and give a different aspect to our play.

I hope.. :)

Lucas' improvement is so blindingly obvious it's unreal. He's gone from being the boo boy at Anfield to being our best player over the past month. He has to start against Spurs, if he doesn't he'll knock his confidence completely.

He's showing more attacking intent, his passing has improved and he looks a lot stronger.

I agree, he has to start on Sunday and furthermore he deserves an extended run. If he doesn't play it will destroy his confidence. He has been excellent in pre-season and against Athletico he seemed to make a lot more forward runs which the opposition were not picking up. This season is made for him, give him a chance, he will come on loads for it.
