Cattermole just has had a monster of a season nanny , have you watched him play? He's like an masch , he chases down the ball , an old fashioned classic defensive mid. I think rafa is worried that this 6+5 rule is finnaly going to take into effect thus we have been signing more english players lately .

So would I, without a moments hesitation. I do actually think Lucas will make a footballer somewhere, I've always said that, but I'm begining to have nagging doubts about whether it will end up being in the premiership.

If we are looking for young English and affordable midfielders, I'd be more inclined to someone at someone like Jermaine Jenas who you'd get for around 10. He's box to box, got energy to burn and is better than he looks IMHO if that doesn't sound daft. Sometimes players need to play in a certain environment to really prosper, and we're going to have an opening which is made in heaven for a young midfielder. They're going to have Masherano sweeping up behind them, Gerrard and Torres punching holes in defences in front of them. I take Lucas to be better than he has been so far, and I'd take Jenas over Cattermole.

Funnily enough as well and returning to a previously well worn theme, Jimmy Bullard would look like a good player in our team in Alonso's role as well. He's not my original pick, Stu the red has that distinction, but he'd be a very handy player playing in between Gerrard and Masherano.

I've suggested Jenas before Mick.  I think he's a good player who's just gone a bit stale and needs a bigger challenge to push himself on.  I don't think he's quite in Alonso's class, but for me he's no worse than the likes of Hargreaves, Carrick or perhaps Barry.

There's not that many English players outside the top 5 now worth a look (I'll include City in a top 5 because they're certainly not a selling club now - the other 15 Premiership clubs are imo).  Here are a few that are I reckon:

Jenas (Spurs), A Young (Villa), Wheater (Boro), Lescott (Everton), Taylor (Newcastle), Taylor (Bolton), Cahill (Bolton), Johnson (Fulham).

I think that Young and Lescott are perhaps unrealistic - Can't see Moyes selling to us and doubt we could afford Young.  Of the others I think Johnson is an interesting one.  He is essentially a poor man's Torres.  Good at playing up on his own and will run the channels all day.  Hard worker and not bad at taking chances.  He's 28 now.  For me a back-up striker should always have been the priority this summer and for me Johnson would be a good choice.

Call me an eternal optimist but I believe Lucas will come good. I also think if Alonso does leave that Lucas will be his replacement.
Floyd stepped left and threw the hook that caught Hatton flush under the chin. Finally, the British champ had arrived in that mythical place of which his fans speak: Hatton Wonderland.

Lucas is a good player but I honestly dont think he will ever be up to our starting 11 line up. I can see him becoming a good sqaud player though.

Cattermole is a really good footballer ,with bags of talent he,s  also young ,but with vital experience in the Premiership ,I think he is more of an attacking player than Mascherano but his passion and enthusiasm for the game is on a par with our little chief .
If anyone's  in doubt have a gander at some footage from last season especially the bitters game and the Mancs

I'd actually have Cattermole ahead of Lucas, although I don't rate him much he's quite a hard b@stard. You won't get much finesse from him, you just won't get past him :D  Jenas is a good shout, not in the Alonso league but at the very least would be solid cover, though I doubt Spurs will think £10m is enough given he's their best midfielder; the player they intend to build the side around.

I don't rate Jenas ,I seriously thinks he lacks the drive or indeed the heart to be Xabi's replacement ,but Cattermole's elegance on the ball is sadly overlooked probably due to his imposing nature towards opponents .

I do agree though he is definitely not one to shirk a confrontation .      :D

lucas i do hate to admit my idea of him is love to hate lol, although i wouldn't have jenas, and i wouldn't use cattermole, he still needs a year if any thing, i would utilise lucas sometimes but i would still like to bring in a centre mid, dream reality it would love xavi :P , but i wouldn't mind if rafa found one of his lil ol gems lol :D, although i would like to see spearing again because from what i seen he is a very quick and has good energy, charisma and positioning, he would be good utilised as a centre defensive mid, along with mascherano, he may step up because of mascherano, being very much like him in that he has energy charisma and positioning and makes promising runs, so he might see how mascherano is like him and think what is mascherano doing? and then he will learn from that, but he still needs experience so other people may be like hmmmm, but i would deffianately not cross out a centre mid, i would certainly keep my eyes open if i were rafa, if he gets 30 mil then find a decent centre mid for 20-25 as a replacement, but i would find him inside the premiership or if not suited towards the physical game of the premiership

Spurs will not sell Jenas.

Lucas has the potential to make it, but can we afford to allow him to do that by throwing him in there? Cattermole is in the same sort of position.. really unproven at this time, but would not go straight into the side and be successful.

Bullard is proven, but is he what we want.

There are also rumours that a certain Patrick Viera wants to come back to the EPL. He is 33 years old, but for me if he is available he would be a fantastic piece of business, at a cut price, and may do a similar job for us for one or two seasons that Gary Mac did. Just an idea to throw in there.

Liverpool's Lucas Leiva has held talks with the directors of Brazilian side Corinthians about a move. "You have to see what Rafa Benitez plans," he said. "The president of Corinthians already know that I am interested in and what I want." (Brazilian TV station Terra)

From the BBC Gossip Column

Bloody hell don't tell me he want out now and all?  It could be a big season for him this year
