Portsmouth accept Liverpool bid for Glen Johnson

Window watch: England right back could be on his way to Anfield after South Coast club accept £18.5 million offer

Gary Jacob, James Ducker

Liverpool had an offer of about £18.5 million for Glen Johnson accepted last night. The successful bid comes after they struggled to raise the money to buy him when he was valued at about £8.5 million in January.

The Portsmouth and England right back subsequently signed a new four-year contract, but his future club appears clearer with Chelsea unwilling to match the fee for a player they sold for £4 million two years ago. Manchester City expressed an interest, but have not matched the price, which will include add-ons.

Liverpool will raise funds from the potential sales of Álvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena and from outstanding money that they are owed from the sale of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth for £11 million a year ago. The Anfield club have expressed an interest in Micah Richards, the Manchester City defender.

If that price is correct, me thinks we got a bargain with Torres. If he was from another country, he'd be worth about £6 million. Typical over the top prices for english players.
From Shankly to Brendan we follow our team, Rome to Istanbul we've all lived the dream. Our journey is long, our goal stays the same, to keep for our children the famous red name.

If that is true then Benitez has lost the fu.cking plot.  18.5 million for Johnson is pathetic.  He's worth about a quarter of that maybe.  I don't even think Alves cost Barce that much and he's 10 times the attacking full back Johnson is.  Even Maicon is reportedly possibly on the move this summer, is also 10 times the player Johnson is and I bet you'd get him for less than 18.5 million.  Christ, we might just be able to tempt Madrid into selling Ramos for that type of money.

If, and it's a big if, this is true then it is up there with our biggest wastes of money of all time.

18.5 million for a full back that can't defend.  FU.CK. ME. :no

I cannot believe we would ever pay that some of money for a right back never mind a half decent young english rospect that may not be able to make the step up... Surely if we have that amount of money to spend we could buy a better player! ???

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that a third, as yet unnamed club has entered the race to sign Antonio Valencia.

The Ecuador international is poised to leave The Latics this summer after outgrowing his surroundings and Whelan recently confirmed that United had been in talks as they seek a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real, who have agreed a world record £80 million transfer fee for Ronaldo, are long-term admirers of Valencia and are also believed to have made an offer in the region of £17 million.

It was expected that Valencia would be heading to either Old Trafford or the Bernabeu but Whelan has now stated that a third club has requested talks with the player and his agent.

Liverpool have been linked with the player in the past and Rafa Benitez is expected to reinforce his wide options this summer.

Valencia initially joined Wigan on loan from Villarreal following the 2006 World Cup when he was on the shortlist to be named young player of the tournament.

A permanent deal was completed in January 2008 and The Latics are now on the brink of making a huge profit on the 23-year-old winger.Link
