Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is making a British record £45m bid for Valencia striker David Villa. Ferguson will take on Real Madrid for the signature of the Spanish star who will be sold by his cash-strapped club.

Rafa Benitez has made a £6m offer for Real Madrid's Alvaro Negredo but faces competition from Valencia. Cash-strapped Valencia want Negredo, 23, to be part of any deal for striker David Villa, who is a £35m target for Real.

I wouldnt be happy if i was that Negredo, just being used as a bargaining tool if Real fancy another clubs players  :no

Saviola and Torres would make a fab line up front! come on fellas, Torres is the kind of player that could make Saviola play his best football - for us!  If he can bag 20+ and Torres get near 30 were in with a real chance for that title next year.

I would see Saviola as a decent option off the bench when we are desperate and as an option when Torres is hurt, playing up front with Kuyt

I dont think Saviloa has ever got 20 a season, but to be fair I don't think Fernando was a prolific striker before he arrived here either.

'decent option off the bench'
'when we are desperate'
'when Torres is hurt'
'up front with Kuyt' (who is not a first line attacker

So Joe looking at your precise words, he´s a major compromise and we still dont have a second striker.

Thanks Red Ben.

Another observation - why has he been bought and sold so often? Surely if the lad if good you hold onto him, as with Torres?

I would phrase it as a "value buy" and I would say that we would have a 2nd striker, if you mean someone to back up Torres. If you mean a partner for Torres, I guess he could do that, but If Gerrard and Torres are both fit, he isn't playing (but neither is anybody else so that isn't much of a statement)

Put it this way, as far as next season goes, I would rather gamble on Saviola than Voronin or N'Gog. If all three of them play at their highest level next year, Saviola will have had the best season.

Saviola

Barcelona
01-02: 44 (21)
02-03: 51 (20)
03-04: 45 (19)

Monaco
04-05: 36 (12)

Sevilla
05-06: 43 (14)

Barcelona
06-07: 24 (10)

Real Madrid
07-08: 17 (3)
08-09: 11 (2)

Torres

Atletico Madrid
01-02: 37 (7)
02-03: 31 (14)
03-04: 40 (21)
04-05: 49 (20)
05-06: 40 (13)
06-07: 40 (15)

Liverpool
07-08: 46 (33)
08-09: 38 (17)

A fair few of those have come in cup competitions.

I guess unless we are going to change our system we are not really going to get a top class striker to sit on the bench incase Torres gets injured.

Also does this mean Babel will again be used more on the wings? I would have hoped he would feature more centrally up front next season.

Saviola's never been given a fair chance at madrid thats why his confidence is shot , at barca he was on fire and if anyone can get the best out of him i think it will be rafa . He'd be motivated to show that madrid made a mistake with selling him and also you don't lose his kind of footballing ability overnight
