owen 'pay as you play' what a ridiculas sugestion! he'd be bankrupt by nov, no player in this day an age, let alone sh1t house agents would alow that to happen anyway.

owen has other interestes i agree, but he will still hold out for as much money as a club is willing to shell out. that's why for me it's a none starter, totally agree we need to move foward invest in players wisely to ensure valuable transfer money, wages is not wasted anymore.

FWIW also would anyone really want any player from newcastle, their attitude going into the last couple of games even was a joke, their fight team spirit was none existant, i certainly wouldn't want any near LFC. if the likes of downing are good enough for some people on here - fine you are entitled to your opinion, but how many goals did he score this season? ... if he wanted a move to a top side, when he knew boro were doomed he cetainly didn't put himself in the shop window very well did he!

more like played in the reduced section, oopps buy now for quick sale as it 'fit' for anything else.

relegation rejects we defo don't need. let's aim higher why not ffs we are LFC & need players who will help take us foward not backwards.

Would Kevin Nolan offer more off the bench as a replacement or in the dressing room than Lucas? Certainly nowhere near the potential of the Brazillian, nor the technique, but he's a player who's cut from the cloth which I like. A trier, good pro, scouser, scores a goal from midfield, would walk to Anfield if you told him he was guaranteed 37 minutes of first team action per season. Probably would feature on the list of players which Newcastle will need to move on because of his wages.

Bit out there granted but just a thought anyway.

What about their Argentinian lad who was doing really well start of the season... Jonas Gutieres or however its spelled... A work horse like Kuyt but if we end up selling Babel and not bringing in a winger we might want to consider having another backup wide player besides Benny...

Im with you ace, owen still scored somethin like 25 goals in 55 games at newcastle, despite his injuries and newcastle's lack of chances! if he's willing to take say £50,000 a week rafa should snap his hand off. Also he made it clear that he wanted to come to liverpool, just newcastle were willing to pay 17 mill and we weren't. More importantly tho, who would you rather see come off our bench...owen or the talents of n'gog and el zhar?!

can we end this michael owen garbage please, he's motivated by money and had his chance at this club. He spends most of his time injured. He's scored 30 goals over a four year period for Newcastle, getting better than him cant be too difficult. Even if some believe he's great there's far too much risk associated with him. We need a striker who we know can either link up with Torres or take his place when he's injured, not sure Owen can do either IMO

Don't know about gutierrez either, looks a decent player but I reckon we need straight improvements in positions this summer and I don't know if he fits the bill. Would be a good sub tho

The rumour I just read on bbc is the bitters are offering £50k a week to Owen, that doesn't necessarily mean Owen is willing to play for £50k a week. It's more likely £50k is at the top end of the bitters' wage structure

I think smeegel would be taking a bit of a risk adding Owen to a strikefarce that comprises Yakubu and Saha already, not that I feel Owen isn't an asset, but three players who are injury worries if not injury prone is a bit of a gamble. I'm surprised he doesn't go for Crouch or someone like that

08/09

Owen : 10 goals in 32 apps
Saha : 8 goals in 29 apps
Yakubu : 5 goals in 17 apps

07/08 :

Owen : 13 goals in 33 apps
Saha : 5 goals in 24 apps (Man Utd)
Yakubu : 21 goals in 41 apps*

*includes two goalless games for Boro

Of course Owen's 32 and 33 apps may not seem a lot, but don't forget Newcastle are rarely in Europe or have runs in cups, so something in the low 40s would be ever-present!

If smeegel wants to sign "injury prone" Owen, he's played more games for Newcastle in the last two seasons (65) than Yakubu (58) and Saha (53), and more than either this season. If that makes Owen "injury prone", I hate to think what that makes Saha and Yakubu!

i think his injury record is over exaggerated by many and by the same margin people tend to over exaggerate the 'risk' factor associated with him coming to Liverpool... as far as im concerned its the best time to sign Owen now.. on a free its as low a risk as you could get in signing any quality player...

And what happens when he wants a big signing on fee - around 3 mil plus 100 grand a week and only plays say 10 games - thats 8 million he would of cost us for ten games

thats not free . No such thing as a free signing. The injuries are starting to appear more often for him - first season with barcodes he was out for 6 months then was fit for world cup then got injured and was out for 9 months (surprisingly he was fit in time for summer internationals) he now constantly spends time on the sidelines with thigh injuries and pulled muscles . That is too much of a risk , we already have degen taking kewells slot in the physio room.

GYBS you are assuming an awful lot though mate.

He will want 100 grand a week
He will want 3 million to sign
He will always be out injured

They are all assumptions, yes he may have history in all the areas that concern you.

But when he was moving clubs previously he was a top player and could command silly things. It may have been greedy asking them but i am sure he isnt the first footballer that considers money when looking at moving clubs, see Robinho down the road.

He is now in a last chance saloon and in no way could he start calling the shots if Rafa spoke to him, regarding sky high wages and signing on fees. If he did we walk away.
Nothing ventured nothing gained is the saying.

If he does however accept a pay cut and not ask for a silly signing on fee then he is without doubt worth a look.

We would then have an extra experienced replacement striker and wouldnt have blown a big chunk of our budget.

Somebody else asked what player would sign a pay as you play in this day and age ?

Isnt that what Saha is on ? Just a basic amount then more if he actually is fit and plays ?

Saha isnt Owen -. At the moment Owen is on around 110 - 120 grand a week - How much of a pay cut do you think Owen would ever take ?? Not much going by previous for Owen . Im sorry Ace but people must think he has suddenly changed as a person - He hasnt - He is still out for number 1. And Owen taking a pay as you play ?? not in a million years

He has turned down Rafa twice - I would be amazed if Rafa gave him a third chance

People are getting confused here. Owens contract expires in the Summer, so he'll then be on zip, nil, nothing. If he signs for a club for 50 grand a week, that's 2.6 million quid a year. As football fans, we get blase (how do you do those accent things?) about footballers salaries, kind of immune to the numbers. 2.6 million quid is a huge amount of money for anyone to earn in a lifetime never mind a year, be they a footballer, a CEO or anyone else. That isn't a "pay cut", because he won't be actually in line to get paid anything once his contract runs out.

As for his "signing on fee", well I wouldn't offer him a penny as a "signing on fee" if we were to sign him. If other clubs offer him a "signing on fee" and he'd rather play for them, then peachy. I would though if we were interested in him offer him 2 million quid a year as a basic salary (40 grand a week or thereabouts) along with bonuses for appearances and scoring goals.

My guess is though that we won't be interested in him (I wouldn't sign him myself TBH) and that we'll sign somebody else instead. I do think though that Owen at an Everton will score sh!t loads of goals, probably at a rate which is marginally better than one goal every two games he plays in. That's generally what he does.

100 grand a week ?

Not having that not in a million years.

City have the money without doubt but there has been no hints that they are in for him.

Spurs just signed back Keane and Defoe as well as having Bent and Pavlyuchenko, they may try and offload the last two but that would then mean if they went in for Owen they would have 3 small similar players up top.
I also dont think they would pay 100 grand.

Pompey are interesting cos we dont know what the new owners have in store, but from what i read it was more a case of them wanting to build the club and not just throw silly money round like city.

Guess we will see given time but i cant see him getting anywhere near 100 grand these days.

Dont be surprised Ace if he does pick up those wages - If not in the prem then somewhere around the world . Man City paid 18 mil for someone they could of got for 3 million if they waited 6 months . 100 grand a week will be peanuts for them and in the eyes of thier owners he will be a big star name.

Ok Mick will change the wording from Pay cut to a drop in wages in a new job - Owen wont half those wages in a new job .
