why do we play like ****** at the back sometimes ??? ??? ??? ???

we have to be rock solid at the back for champs league otherwise we will not get anywhere..i hope benni is working in training about our defence we will need to make a big impression.

Benitez will steady the ship for the time being with what he has but my answer as to why we look vunerable would be because we dont have a keeper who is oozing with confidence and we dont have a out and out partner for Sami at the moment. Josemi is still finding his feet but one bright spark has been Riise who looks like he is going to be that player we once saw again.

I'm sure Rafa is working on our defensive unity the hardest at the moment.. we have good individual defensive players.. we just need to get the understanding that we had a few years back.

Oh, and welcome back chiggs... i thought you were gonna be gone till Jan??

The main problem with our defence is the lack of speed. Also Carra is not a natural centreback and I think his ability to 'read' the danger and then snuffing them out is out of sync as compared to the top defenders and naturally when our defenders react, it is too late. Also, they are not helped by having a 'keeper who seems rather short of confidence.

Compared to the likes of Emlyn Hughes, Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Gary Gillespie etc., the present lot give away some one or two yards in pace. I remember reading an article by Hansen that he and Lawrenson "can't really tackle well" but made it up by playing a bit more forward to set an offside trap and relied more on their speed and anticipation to make up for their lack of tackling abilities.

I agree, the keeper lacking confidence is a major problem for the defenders. I don't think Jerzy is big enough or stong enough for the position. A good keeper must be a real presence scaring both attackers and his own defenders alike. A collision with a good strong keeper should result in the player getting hurt (generally speaking) not the keeper. Jerzy Dudek won't scare my grandmother!

It all starts from the back. The best keeper we have had in years was probably Brad Friedel. And he could not get a game because of Sander Westerveld (remember him). Lets hope Rafa is on it. To me it is a glaring problem that must be fixed. It breaks the spirit to keep giving soft goals away.

Kazza, our defence is still slow and can really be ponderous at times. This must be addressed also in time, the sooner the better.

Most top European strikers have good mobility, good turn of speed and are also skillful. They only need half a chance to punish their opponents.

I agree, but I thought that were you to have a a good keeper, the players you do have would play a little more relaxed and maybe better. You are correct, speed is a great equalizer, and if you don't have it you have to play further back and invite pressure, which they do.
